This Ginza Bairin at K-11 was a notoriously difficult to locate restaurant in spite of the signage and directions in the mall. This directly affected the flux of customers and should have been the top consideration for the managers of this particular store - yet after all these years there was little improvement in this area. My friend lost her way (as expected) but not her appetite not her temper and we sat down to a sumptuous meal.
The set dinner menu (for certain card holders) started with a cherry shrimp salad with croutons which was too heavy with the seasoning. The preserved burdock was a typical Japanese snack I loved nibbling. The assorted sashimi of tuna, shrimp, salmon and yellowtail were quite fresh. The deep fried breaded dishes were the signature and we were very pleased with the hot and crispy breaded oyster and minced pork. The scallop was a bit less of a wow as it was rather thick and needed some chewing after biting through the breaded coat. The pork loin was the best as one could taste the different layers of fat and meat, both matching the golden breaded coat perfectly. The liberty with the three sauces and the free-refill shredded cabbage were also unique to this home of tonkatsu. Needless to say, rice matched the deep fried food items every bit as well as the shredded cabbage. A minor glitch as staff forgot to serve miso soup and, when reminded, appeared doubtful as though we were cadging miso soup off the restaurant. Strawberry ice cream wasn't available, but it turned out vanilla was smooth and rich.
All in all, with the 50%-off discount, this amounted to a gratifying dinner at $281 each. Yet with its secluded location and its service having so much room for improvement, I think it safe to declare that there would not be a second visit any time soon.
