Fotan is characterized by the 3 F's: Factories, Fix-your-car shops and more recently, Fotanians (basically artists with workshops in the area). The store was a roomy 3,000 square feet, and the decor, many say, is the main attraction of the new entrant, I can agree to that: wacky and wonderful vintage items lined the walls of the main dining area, a full sized Vespa stood in a corner under an old hairdresser machine, and no chair in the restaurant were alike. But somehow these all merged harmoniously into a cosy dining environment. It almost felt like an upstairs cafe.
The menu varies daily and according to the time of day, with a few mainstays. My pick was the Spiced Fried Chicken 鹹酥雞 ($50), which was served on a industrial looking tray with matching wares. Thought had been given in the utensils, as the hot drink that came with the meal was served in a heat proof cup.The chicken was thickly-cut, well-battered, crunchy and strong on the salt as expected. The portions were small, the chicken, rice and the two lonely strands of bak choi were quickly devoured, leaving me only half-full.
I would have ordered two sets or asked for desserts (+$8 for a brownie or +$12 for cake) but decided to save that for another time. Extra rice is also possible if you ask when ordering. I enjoyed the environment and think this is a nice place to relax and chill in. Fotan is finally coming up with quality places!
