Just back from my Indian trip earlier this year, still remember the mouth-watering curry dishes of Mumbai that I tried.

My friend working in Central is also a lover of curry cuisines. He invited me for lunch in a local Indian food restaurant last weekend.

I have been to the curry corner in Central around Wyndham street quite a few times but was not aware of this Rang Mahal Indian Food at Queen’s Road Central right next to the Mid-Levels Pedestrian Escalator Walkway.

The Rang Mahal is a restaurant with very authentic Indian décor. This matches with my impression of the shops that I have visited in India.

My friend said he usually opted for lunch buffet during weekdays but since we visited the shop on Saturday, we have decided to go for the a-la-cart menu instead.

While we waited for the food, I noticed that there were a few shiny metal delivery boxes at the corner of the restaurant, very similar to the boxes used by the dabbawalas (lunch-delivery service) in Mumbai.

The manager, whilst very surprised that I knew the word “dabbawalas”, confirmed they sometimes use the boxes for office and home catering deliveries. I explained that I had a recent trip to Mumbai and have seen a few dozen of the dabbawalas men in action around the Mumbai Central Rail Station.

While we talked, our first order of curry Samosas was ready. The Samosas tasted real good – plenty soft potato and bean paste with rich spices inside and very crispy crust outside.

Our second order was Chicken Makhani, a creamy tomato based curry delicacy of Punjab. This blended in very well with soft garlic naan bread that we ordered. I was very grateful to learn that the Chef made the naan right upon our order.

The Grand Finale of our curry lunch was the sizzling mixed grill of Lamb, Fish, Chicken Tikka and Tandoori Chicken. For me, a hot and spicy Tandoori Chicken with some browned onion, fresh lemon juice and mint yoghurt is a must for Indian food meals. The Tandoori Chicken of Rang Mahal was crispy, spicy and very satisfying!

After the meal, I was very convinced that though Rang Mahal is not the true dabbawalas of Mumbai, they are equally capable to continue the century-old dabbawalas heritage of delivering quality Indian food in Hong Kong.
