I have been to this place many many times since my work is in Wan Chai. I really like that they have some tables outside where you can sit down to enjoy your breakfast, lunch, coffee, etc. The food, desserts, coffee they have are nice and what I like is that they have everything on display so you can see what you are going to get. Yesterday, while waiting for my coffee to get ready, I was browsing the big loaves of bread they have on display. They looked really nice, reminded me of home where you get in the bakeries and you see those big, warm, crunchy loaves that just came out of the oven. I walked closer to have a better look and I saw something that made me blink a couple of times just to make sure it was real... some of them where at HKD140/kilo... either the flour is travelling 1st class to get here or the water being used to make them is from melted glaciers.
In the end I thought 'okay', this is Hong Kong, Wan Chai... one of the most expensive cities in the world. Western product in Asia... is bound to be expensive.
What happened today though, really made me decide not to visit that place again. The last couple of times I have been there, I had a double espresso with ice (what a gweilo... right?), in all these times, I was paying HKD25, as much as it is on the menu. Today the same thing was HKD39. When asked why... it is because it is an ice coffee. I explained that all the previous times the same thing was HKD25, my comment was simply ignored... So, one cup of ice, in Passion, costs HKD14. It must be from the same glacier water that they make that amazing bread.
Conclusion? for any of you that would like an iced double espresso from Passion, simply ask for a hot double espresso and one cup of ice separately. You will save yourselves HKD14.
