Looking at their extensive menu downstairs... I had high hopes for this place. We arrived at 7.30 to find ourselves the only other customers. But after a while the restaurant slowly filled up even on a tuesday night.

After browsing through the menu, I picked for myself a fish soup, hamachi sashimi, asparagus yakitori and mushroom yakitori, whilst my friend picked the edamame, scallop skewers and beef and enoki yakitori.

Fish Soup
This soup was a creamy white colour, and it was quite thick/rich in consistency - I couldn't help but wonder if they added something like cornstarch...but I couldn't tell....There was a piece of silken tofu and a fish fillet rolled with spinach. The fish was actually not cooked well - the meat was still transparent on the inside! The soup could've been hotter, whilst less thick and it was slightly too 'fishy' in taste...The tofu was very good and smooth though.

Hamachi
I was shocked by its serving! For $120 this is certainly quite 'cheap', but the sashimi I thought was not cold enough, and I think I would've preferred them to be more thinly sliced, rather than a huge chunk in my mouth..but this is subjective I think.

Edamame
I am not a fan, but these were worse than I last tried edamame, since they weren't salted so they tasted like boiled soya beans....

Asparagus Yakitori
The sauce was very good and flavourful without being too salty. But this I felt was slightly small in portion for what they were charging.

Mushroom Yakitori
These were well cooked but I would prefer them to be slightly more 'burnt'.

Scallop Yakitori
These were cooked till slightly rare in the middle. For its thickness, cooking them well-done would give them a tough exterior, so I thought it was acceptable that they didn't cook them through to the center.

Beef rolled with enoki yakitori
These took way too long to be prepared - i have a feeling they forgot our order because I had to remind them twice....Anyway, taste wise it was okay (due to the sauce) but the beef was too over-cooked. It looked and tasted tough - no good at all!

I expected much more from Hanagushi - as it has been in LKF for such a long time and with so many patrons even on a tuesday night... I can forgive over-done beef but not raw fish in a "fish soup"....
