Boyfriend and I were in PMQ to participate in the ENxNICH festival. As we walked around the various shops, we came upon Phoenix Sweets. There used to be a kiosk in Causeway Bay but that has since closed down. As I really like their cupcakes and I came here to buy some cute panda cookies during the 100 Pandas, I wanted to have a cupcake break.Matcha Red Bean Cupcake ($40). Matcha Red Bean Cupcake ($40). The staff told us that this was a new flavor. As we were here for the Japanese fair below, boyfriend and I chose this. The matcha frosting was a nice strong matcha flavor. It was also rich and smooth. A great buttercream frosting. The base had a sprinkle of red bean in it. It was moist and very vanilla based cake. I think I liked the frosting more. Yuzu Cupcake ($35). As we were still following the Japanese theme, we decided on one more cupcake and that was yuzu. This is quite possibly the most beautiful cupcake ever as it had a delicate edible flower on it. Under the air conditioning, the flower fluttered like a butterfly and a customer next to me ooohed at how beautiful it was. I agree. It was beautiful. The buttercream was a rich yuzu flavor. I love everything yuzu and this did not disappoint. The cake base was also vanilla based. Somehow the yuzu didnt distract from the base unlike the matcha. This is possibly my favorite cupcake from their shop. Always a lovely place for a cupcake break. The shop makes you feel girly. Fitting as cupcakes are a very girly dessert. I saw they have cupcake sets where you can order a cupcake and a coffee/tea for a certain amount. I think pretty nice combo. Will be back.
