I cannot say how much I love L'Eclair de Genie. I think I wrote quite a number of reviews about this place. I spent quite a lot of money and many a calorie every time I walk by their shop. I can't resist! So, when they invited me to try out their new Mid Autumn Festival treat, I was so honored and yes ... I had to go.L'Eclair de Genie originates from Paris and is created by Christophe Adam. Christophe Adam creates not your typical eclair. His elcairs are creative mixtures of flavors and artistic
L'Eclair de Genie originates from Paris and is created by Christophe Adam. Christophe Adam creates not your typical eclair. His elcairs are creative mixtures of flavors and artistic flair. A bit like rock n' roll. It's never something you expect but you will love. With several shops in Paris, it later expanded to Japan and then Hong Kong. Starting in Pacific Place, it later expanded to other areas of Hong Kong with their newest location in Tai Koo Shing's Cityplaza and was where I was headed to.
The Cityplaza location is located on the ground floor, near Starbucks. It's actually in between the elevators. Though geared for takeaway, they do have seating available. They have the eclairs displayed in a counter. All are labelled in English. They also sell chocolates and chocolate spread. As Mid Autumn Festival is coming up, like many other shops in Hong Kong that will create a special Mid Autumn creation, so have they. For Mid Autumn Festival, two new eclair flavors are for sale. Eclair Mooncake ($48). Topped with pastry that mimics one found on mooncake, it was filled with a peanut butter and strawberry cream. Personally, the only part I like in mooncake is the pastry part. I don't like the lotus paste and the egg yolk. I really do just eat the pastry part and leave the rest. So, having this as a topping was ok. The filling was a peanut butter and strawberry cream. I found it interesting they didn't use a lotus flavored cream to truly mimic a mooncake in elcair form. Instead they used something I grew up on. For those that grew up in North America, peanut butter and jam sandwiches are a staple in any childhood. To this day, I have a jar of peanut butter and a jar of jam for those days when I want to make a fast sandwich for myself. So, having this childhood love found inside an eclair gave me absolute joy. Red Bean and Sesame Eclair ($48). The second eclair from their Mid Autumn selection was topped with a rich black sesame cream. It was dotted with dots of red bean paste and a glittery white chocolate ball that represented the full moon. Inside it was filled with a vanilla pastry cream and more red bean and black sesame cream as well. This was an intensely flavored eclair. The black sesame over powered everything to the point that all I could taste was black sesame. Thus, pushing the red bean paste to the side. This was definitely an eclair to have only on it''s own as after tasting this, all other flavors just could not compare. Hazelnut Milk Chocolate Moon ($68). They also have two chocolates available. The first hollow chocolate ball that looks like the moon. Made of 40% milk chocolate, it wasn't too sweet at all but had a creamy texture when tasting it. Cracking it open, you will find six nuggets of hazelnuts wrapped in white chocolate and dusted with regular chocolate. A fairly nice surprise inside. Crunchy Double Chocolate Mooncake ($58). What would Mid Autumn festival be without mooncakes? L"Eclair de Genie has created their own. It was actually pretty heavy. The outer coating is a dark chocolate. They have topped it with a gold dusted chocolate with an elegant design. Cutting it open (and I'm telling you, I had to use a butcher's knife to cut this!), you will find a filling of milk chocolate, almond butter and crunchy bits. This was one big piece of chocolate and I couldn't finish in one go. I liked the crunchy with semi sweetness of the chocolate. The chocolate was smooth and creamy. This was truly decadent. You can order the chocolates in single packages where they will be packaged in a clear plastic box. They also have a gift set where you get four chocolate mooncakes and one chocolate moon for $388.
All this is available now until Mid Autumn Festival is over.
