We originally planned to go a Chinese restaurant nearby but it was fully booked. My friend then recommended Belgos, she said she had been there for a few times and the overall experience was not bad. Happy hour after monday work sounded brilliant so we decided to spend our night here.
Feeling something frizzy and refreshing to cool myself down upon arrival so I first got a fresh lime soda. After reading the menu, we decided to get more snacks and appetizers to pair with the drinks. Finally we ordered escargots, calamari, belgos nachos, buffalo drumsticks and moules marinieres.
Escargots were placed on a black parmesan base which we first thought was soil, very creative plating and I love it! Texture was smooth, niether chewy nor rubbery. Garlic butter sauce was stuffed in the shells, parsley also added a punch of flavor to it. Simple seasoning but flavouful, good job!
Next was the calamari, they were cut in thick slices and served with lemon and tartar sauce. Chewy and tender, not rubbery at all. Freshly deep fried so very hot, almost burnt my tongue when I took the first bite. Batter was perfect, very thin and crispy!
Buffalo drumsticks were again fried to perfection with crunchy skin. They were partially deboned so very easy in handling. Meat wasn't tough but juicy. Buffalo sauce and white sauce were served on side so you can dip according to own preference. The whole presentation of this dish was just like chicken pointing their sexy legs to the sky.
Nachos was covered with raclette cheese and a variety of toppings and garnishes, including chorizo sausage, bacon, cilantro and spicy sour cream. Tortilla chips were crispy, well-matched with the toppings. Very good snacks to pair with the drinks, couldn't stop eating. It's finger-licking good.
Moules marinieres was served with bread and fries. Fries was the thin-cut type, eating it alone was already good enough. However, mussels were a bit disappointing. The white wine cream sauce was too thin, not thick and rich enough to hold onto the mussels. To me, this dish was a bit too bland.
Lastly, I ordered a belgos pampermousse to end our happy hour. The drink was made up of gin, grapefruit syrup, lime juice and orange bitter. It had a super rich grapefruit flavour but I found it overly sweet to drink even after the dilution by melted ice.
Overall, the dinning experience was pleasant. Good food, nice staff, great ambience, and more importantly, no time limit!
