Two late lunches in a row, both times Pret had sold out of vegetarian soup so I found myself seeking alternatives. I'll occasionally stop by Ebeneezers if I don't have much choice (generally the portion size is more than I want for lunch), but this time I noticed that they're doing a special and offering two alternative curry varieties with rice for $53 each, (this Ebeneezers has a much smaller variety of curies than the others as it normally caters to the night crowd). Yesterday I ordered chana masala, a chickpea-based curry with a tomatoey sauce. I often order this dish in Indian restaurants if there's no paneer option that I want so I can enjoy this particular version as being acceptable but not the best. The sauce wasn't as rich and buttery as some places make it but I think health wise that's probably not a bad thing. The chickpeas felt soft but not yet mushy, I would guess they came from a tin as I could feel the graininess that I associate more with tinned than dried chickpeas. Spice-wise it was well balanced (I opted for medium heat), a little hot and very well flavoured. It also tasted good the next morning when I heated it up in the microwave (on a high heat and after keeping it refrigerated - food safety please).

Today I ordered the dal makani, I've never had this variety of dal before, (it includes red beans as well as lentils), so I don't have anything to compare it to. Actually I preferred this dish to the chana masala, it had a slightly more soupy quality to it and soup was what I wanted to eat. The sauce base was very similar to the chana masala although this one felt a little more buttery. I really liked the wholesome texture of the lentils and red bean pieces. It felt filling and the mixture of familiar spices and heat were warming. Both times the rice served was plain white rice, nothing special and nothing to complain about.

No one comes to Ebeneezer's for top quality food, more for a cheap hit of what you fancy but I really hope that this special offer is here to stay because I would really like to have it as a regular lunch option.
