Locofama, with an emphasis on offering organic healthy options using ingredients from Hong Kong’s local farms, is located in the renovating and newly blooming district of Sai Ying Pun. A health fanatic friend chose this place for her birthday dinner. I was not looking forward to it, simply because “organic” and “healthy” food normally means “bland” and “tasteless” to me. But it’s her birthday so here I am.It was quite a large group, we were led to a different dining room next to the main store.

It was quite a large group, we were led to a different dining room next to the main store. There were only a few tables here and ours were set up in the innermost section. Immediately the shelves on the wall caught our attention, they sell a lot of healthy/ organic products here including different kinds of food, shampoo and body soap etc., I wasn’t interested so I didn’t look too closely.

At the end of our table were a couple of fridges, which they constantly had the birthday girl (sat at the head of the table) stood up throughout the meal to let them retrieve ingredients from! That was really distracting and inconsiderate… Thankfully it didn’t bother her enough to set her in a bad mood on her birthday, but most of us were not pleased.

Drinks and appetizers came out soon after we ordered, we got soooo much food but their portions are very tiny, so it worked out. I am only going to comment on the ones I’ve tried:

Let’s start with drinks:
Healthy Green: Hmmm… this is the only questionable item from the night. Of course I am sure it was a super healthy and “good for you” type of drink, but I am not sure I could enjoy a grass tasting drink with my meal. However, one of my friends liked it, said it was refreshing.

Rekorderlig Apple cider: Sweet and easy to drink, one of the more complex tasting cider I’ve tried; much better than Somersby in my opinion.

Onto the food items:
Black truffle crab dip: Yummy! Good amount of black truffle paste on the crab dip, slightly salted to keep the dip light, we were fighting for this one! XD
Guacamole dip: The texture of this one was interesting, very light and almost fluffy, zesty with fresh tomato, onion mixed in, it was refreshing, but not the hearty kind of guca dip; I still liked it.

Slow cooked organic chicken, served with coconut curry and quinoa: This dish blown me out of the water! I had never imagined organic chicken breast could possibly be delicious! Coconut curry was not the spicy kind, it was sweet creamy coconut milk with a hint of curry for the rich flavor; organic chicken breast was so moist and tender I could not believe it! Quinoa was another surprise, cooked soft with a bit of crunchiness from tiny shells looking red covers of the quinoa, perfect with paired with the rich coconut curry sauce!

Slow cooked 48 hours natural short ribs: Best dish of the night, however it was a bit overpriced; 6 small pieces of beef for $250. But again, best dish of the night! Meat was so moist and soft it almost melted in my mouth. The slow cooked short ribs soaked in all the flavor of the beef jus and all the other herb yummy goodness! It’s worth trying even at that price. I would not recommend lowering the price, but maybe increasing the portion to make it a true main dish size.

Saikyo miso organic salmon: Again, another amazing dish, the down side was it took forever to come. Most of us were basically done with dinner by the time salmon came for those who ordered it (including me); not the best way to serve a large party, it left us feeling awkward when everyone else was eating their main. But in terms of food quality, it was outstanding! Salmon was fully cooked but still very moist and soft, it was the kind of texture you would expect from a medium cooked salmon, amazing! Salmon skin was coated with miso’s sweetness, slightly crispy on the outside. The portion is again tiny, I guess that’s how they always left us wanting more!

The food here had me totally captivated and changed my mind about “organic healthy eating”. The one thing to make them perfect would be to improve on their service. The other day I even went looking for quinoa and incorporated it into my diet. I admire chefs who made the effort to making healthy food delicious, it really does make a difference in peoples’ lives. Thank you for a delicious and healthy meal.
