If they’re not of the same catering group, I would bet both “Made in HK Restaurant” and “南小館 The Dining Room” shared the same interior design company. With black and white colour scheme, similar bricks or tiles walls and floors, metallic racks for storage of groceries, etc., is this the trend of interior design or the designers are just running out of ideas?

Back to the food, given the name, the menu was filled with a wide spectrum of classical local food which are popular in Cha-chaan-tang (neighbourhood eateries) together with some high end items such as high tea set for two, clams in white wine sauce or even beef rib Wellington. At the price tag of $100 for a lunch set with baked rice with pork loin, I automatically benchmarked the food with Simply Life. I would say “Make in HK” was too aggressive on their menu, a bit overcharged in delivering food of Cha-chaan-tang quality but doubles its price.

From a choice of daily soup or house salad, I picked the former which directly revealed the position of the food quality. Together with a sweet bun and pre-packed butter this sweet corn soup was not only Cha-chaan-tang feel but also of that quality.

This was quite a disappointed dish branded with an attractive name. When the “baked” rice arrived in less than 10 minutes after I had ordered, I already knew that something would go wrong.

The slice deep fried pork (tonkatsu) was super thin which was with the same thickness as the batter wrapping outside. On the good side is that the meat was not too dry and well seasoned. However, the fried rice mixed with parsley, bacon, mushroom and cheese just lacked of flavour.

c) Iced Coffee – 7.5/10

The coffee was a bit acidic. A plus to have shredded ice rather than ice cubes where many classical Cha-chaan-tang use.

Other Info. : Q : When will I go again? A : There should be lots of better choices in the area. May revisit when they’ve changed their chef.
