That might be your reaction when you first set eyes on the storefront at Cosmos House Pancake Café. That’s because at first glance, it looks more like a specialty dessert shop rather than a place where you can also enjoy dinner.
But if you take the time to look past the prominent displays of pancakes topped with fruit and whipped cream, Cosmos House does offer a decent selection of dinner entrees as well.
Mainly offering western dishes, the menu features a good selection of traditional entrees plus some unique dishes, like stews. They also have a choice of kid’s meals which, for some reason, cost more than what the adults eat
After flipping through the impressive menu, we settled on the salmon & scallop platter. This one didn’t look impressive. The seafood had that crust which told you that it was deep fried. Not only do I hate deep fried food, but isn’t that what people do with seafood that’s not fresh? To make matters worse, I was horrified when I cut into the fish and discovered that it was way overdone! As an amateur chef myself, this just seemed like a terrible waste of the salmon. But when I actually tasted the fish, it was surprisingly tasty and the natural flavor really came through. Similarly, the sweetness of the scallops had freshness written all over it. So despite being a bit too tough and overcooked, this dish was a delight overall.
We also ordered the grilled pork loin, which featured meat that was a bit tough. But the sauce and accompanying stir-fried mushrooms gave it a hearty flavor that was as good as you can expect … well at least from a dessert shop.
Finally, turning to something you’d expect this place to excel in, we ordered the mixed fruit pancake. The serving size was HUGE, consisting of 4 pancakes topped with what seemed like about 6 inches of whipped cream! So at times like these, all you can do is put aside your regrets for ordering this mammoth-sized indulgence and just dig in! I am glad I did, as the pancakes were soft and fluffy even by the time we reached the end of this bottomless dish. Sure, I had to do some extra exercise over the weekend to burn off the fat, but it was worth it.
Overall, Cosmos House offered a pleasant dining experience, even though it was more like a restaurant disguised as a pancake parlor. So the next time you’re in the neighborhood asking: “Dessert for Dinner?", you should be bold and just answer “Hey, why not!”
