Sham Shui Po is never short of street snacks. There is always the usual classic Hong Kong snacks to find at every corner. That was until I found 榮家糕點烘培店 (English name: Wings Bakery). A small take away only stand. It sold colorful put chai ko (砵仔糕). Not the usual brown sugar and red bean versions that I'm used to. They were all colors and flavors. They were $9 each or $24 for three. They also sold like cakes of various flavors. The owner explained they were silk strand cakes. These were $15 for thr
This is osmanthus. It was slightly sweet and had the fragrant taste of the osmanthus tea. I wanted something different so chose Kyoho grape flavor. I liked this flavor a lot! It was like eating jelly and I love jelly! So, this was more like having grape jelly on a stick. What a great combination! I was curious about the silk cakes so we bought a cheese flavor one as it was fresh from the oven. I wondered if it would really pull apart with a string-like consistency as the photo at the store showed. Did it? Yes, it did! The cheese flavor wasn't very strong. And it had a strange texture we couldn't put a finger on. A texture that seemed familiar but we didn't know where we've had it before. It was an interesting cake.
Small little street snacks that offer something a little different than the other places. I'd definitely be back for the put chai ko.
