We hadn’t had lunch in Shau Kei Wan in so long. This time we passed by to do something and decided to try this famous place for congee. It was busy lunch hour and it was still manageable to find seats, although sharing a table seemed so common. We were so hungry that we ordered many items to share. First of all, each of us ordered a congee set with a side. We both chose the more expensive congee set at $57. There was no service charge. We ordered 生滾黃膳粥 and 生滾蠔仔粥. We ordered 生滾黃膳粥 and 生滾蠔仔粥. The congees were served on a clay pot, but not to us at the same time. The congee itself was very 綿 and thick enough, although I had had even better ones else where. There were loads of ingredients including oysters and 黃膳. There were some minced pork in the oyster congee, which I personally didn't fancy. The ingredients were fresh enough - the 黃膳 was especially crispy. Overall I would give a pass to the congee given its fame.

The 蝦腸, which came along with the lunch set, was pretty good. The rice paper was super thin and smooth. The shrimps were big and meaty and fresh and crispy. Nicely done indeed. But there were two shrimps for the rice sheet roll on top but only one for the two rice sheet rolls at the bottom.

The 豉油王炒麵 , which came along with the lunch set, was not quite a pass though. It was so dry and not even warm and had nothing special. I saw many people ordering this though.

A basic drink or soup of the day came with the set. Both of us decided to just order the simple soya bean milk. Both cold and hot ones were good, slightly but not overly sweet and rich in soya bean flavour.

We also ordered a 香脆炸両腸粉 at just $19 to share as we had heard that it was very delicious. Indeed! The deep-fried 炸両 was so freshly made that they were so thin and crispy although a bit oily. The rice paper roll was so thin and smooth again. It went great with sweet sauce. Super well done. I would say it was the best among all food items we had tried this time.

Given its fame we also ordered 金牌貴妃雞(例). Portion was less than that on the menu. The chicken itself was ok, fresh and rich in chicken flavour. It was mostly chicken leg meat which I really liked. The bad thing was that it was too salty. Maybe it was good to soak them in congee. A bowl of mashed garlic and spring onion in oil was served separately.

We also ordered 酥炸魷魚鬚 which seemed to be one of the signatures. However, it could have been better as they seemed to be a little bit over done so that the batter was not so good - not crispy or thin enough. Portion was reasonable and the octopuses themselves were fresh and chewy and well seasoned.
In conclusion, the signature congees and rice paper rolls were good, while the signature chicken was also ok.
