I wandered by this place not too long ago and my jaw dropped. Bratwurst! A couple days ago I finally got to try it.The waiter was helpful-- maybe a little too helpful. We tried to order some beers off the menu, but he told us they were out of most of them as they were changing the menu. We wound up with the last two bottles of Rochefort, a Belgian trappist that's pretty rich and tasty. The waiter was helpful-- maybe a little too helpful. We tried to order some beers off the menu, but he told us they were out of most of them as they were changing the menu. We wound up with the last two bottles of Rochefort, a Belgian trappist that's pretty rich and tasty. The waiter kept mentioning how high in alcohol they were and how we probably just wanted one apiece. Look, I know how alcoholic it is-- it's a Belgian beer, like all your other beers. They're all like this. And since when do you know better than I do how many beers I want? I only got one, but I probably would have felt weird ordering a second one after the waiter's speech. The waitstaff shouldn't make you feel weird ordering something.
We decided to get the 4 sausage sampler (they have an 8 sausage one too, but 8 sausages is alot), and we chose: the brat, chorizo, Italian, and habanero sausages. We also got onion rings and parmesan mashed potatoes.
Brat: It was a good brat, but I was hoping it would blow me away, and it didn't. 8/10
Chorizo: Tasted like chorizo, but with a much more standard sausage texture. Very cumin-y. Just not my thing. 6/10
Italian: A very good Italian sausage. I often find Italian sausages to be kinda bland and boring, so I was worried that eating one that wasn't in pasta or tomato sauce wouldn't be very good, but I was pleasantly surprised. 8/10
Habanero: This was a pretty tasty sausage, but I'm going to have to give it a low score. How do you make a habanero sausage that's less spicy than your chorizo or your Italian sausage? I love spicy food and I hate false advertising. 4/10
Mustard: They tried to give us only one mustard. If I'm eating a plateful of sausages, I want a variety of mustard to liven it up. Anyway, we talked them into giving us both the dijon and the honey mustard. My wife thought the dijon was pretty good, and she's an expert, so 9/10
Sauteed mushrooms: Cold and bland. 3/10
Relish: bleh. At least not offensive. 3/10
Onion rings: Good but not amazing. Standard. 7/10
Parmesan mashed potatoes: We sort of just wanted mashed potatoes, but everything here has to be fancy or whatever, so they're parmesan mashed potatoes. In my opinion this made them entirely too sticky and not creamy like good mashed potatoes are. What should have been a comforting addition was a disappointing distraction. 4/10
So in general I thought this place was good. All my sausages were better than average, and the brat and Italian ones were standout. I recommend the dijon, but you might consider getting different sides. Still, I probably won't be back. A pile of sausages is just too salty and meaty for me. 7/10
