Luk Lam Dessert Shop is pretty much the most popular dessert shop in Sham Shui Po. With a huge queue of people waiting to eat there, they specialize in fruit based desserts and their famous tofu pudding.Recently, they have expanded across the harbor to Causeway Bay. Recently, they have expanded across the harbor to Causeway Bay. Located underneath the Bowrington Bridge, near the wet market area, is their new location. Boyfriend and I decided to try it out after dinner as we were lured in by the promotional deal of buy one dessert, get one free as they were newly opened. But the catch was each person had to order one dessert each. So, they allowed take away and will wave the cost of the $1 take away container during the promotion.
The place is a lot more spacious than the Sham Shui Po branch. It's also got nice wooden tables and prettier menus. Where the menu at the Sham Shui Po branch is only in Chinese, this one is in English and Chinese with lots of pretty photos. Boyfriend also noted there was also as slight increase in price. Home Ground Almond with Egg White Sweet Soup ($38). I ordered this and well ... wasn't very good. There wasn't much almond taste. It felt a bit watered down. The addition of egg white didn't make it smoother in taste as well. Coconut Sago Cream Sweet Soup with Fresh Mango Milk and Ice Cream ($39). You get a choice of ice cream and boyfriend chose taro. This was his dessert and it also wasn't very good. It wasn't as mango in taste and also watered down. The ice cream was clumpy and not smooth. I think Hui Lau Shan does a better one than this place. Tofu Pudding with Oreo ($34). As this is what they are famous for and there was a buy one, get one free offer, we shared this one so boyfriend ordered a chestnut sweet soup to take away with him. The pudding was a bit smaller than the Sham Shui Po branch. But it was fairly good with a sweetened tofu flavor. Crumbly Oreo was on top and condensed milk was poured over. Boyfriend took home a chestnut sweet soup ($33) and due to the buy one get one free deal, they waved the $1 takeaway charge. Because as you know .. it's pretty hard to eat four desserts in one go. He noted it wasn't too good either and rather bland. I guess only stick to what they are popular for: the tofu pudding and leave the rest alone.
I would probably be back as it's close enough for me to have my tofu pudding fix. But yeah, I'll stick to only that. Grab the small coupons at the cashier as that will get you 20% off until the end of December.
