As this place has opened up in my neighbourhood it seemed worth giving it a go. The street outside has been consistently full of people enjoying food (and beer) since it opened so it seemed like it should be good. The menu is super simple, they sell like five or six items which are all advertised above the counter. At least three of the items are vegetarian but as myself and my other half weren't so hungry we only ordered two items, the alu tikki and the pani puri. I've never had either of these
The menu is super simple, they sell like five or six items which are all advertised above the counter. At least three of the items are vegetarian but as myself and my other half weren't so hungry we only ordered two items, the alu tikki and the pani puri. I've never had either of these dishes before so I wasn't sure what to expect but spicy fried things are almost always worth trying.
When I got the dishes home and opened them the first thing I noticed is that the soup/sauce/drink which comes with the pani puri is cold. I wasn't expecting this but it that is entirely due to my culinary ignorance. After a little bit of googling it turns out that it is actually a cumin spiced drink called jeera pani and the way to eat pani puri is to dunk it in the drink and eat it quickly before it all falls apart and preferably without making too much of a mess. What I really enjoyed about this dish was the textural variety; inside the little puris were soft spiced potatoes, crunchy chickpea flour fried noodles, peas and a little coriander, the puri shells were part crispy and part soggy after they'd been filled with jeera pani so each one was a really treat for the tastebuds and interesting to eat.

The second item we ordered, alu tikki, came wrapped up in tinfoil and with a sachet of spicy sauce. These potato and pea patties were flavourful but not too spicy (the sauce added quite a bit of heat though). They didn't quite feel warm enough, I think they were cooked earlier and either reheated or kept warm but I think they would have been tastier if they were fresher.

Given that the food was cheap, pretty tasty, it arrived quickly and that this place is very close to home I am pretty sure that it'll become an occasional treat for when I want late night snacks.
