My husband and I wanted to check out the area around HKUST and we happened to discover this Cafe. The menu was not cheap honestly, but the shop facade and interiors look really modern so we gave it a try.It was a Sunday morning. The boss was the only one working in the Cafe. It was a Sunday morning. The boss was the only one working in the Cafe. There were less than 10 customers. When we ordered, he asked another customer if he could wait 20 mins for food, so I also expected 20 mins.
Almist one hour passed, I asked him if we could at least get our coffee (because another lady asked the same). He said "huh is it already that long?" I said my LeaveHomeSafe reminded me I had checked in for one hour so he could estimate how long we had been waiting. He said "You ordered at 12:15pm... oh right it's actually long enough (it was 12:55pm on my watch) I reckon ...hmm." By that time he was still cooking for other people who came before us...!
A waitress arrived then but I saw she did little help to the boss.... the boss asked her to take some ingredients out of the freezer and she didn't know where things were placed.
A man came here to order a take-away coffee and I honestly wondered how the restaurant could still afford to take new orders. Our cappuccinos had not even arrived yet.... nonetheless, I stayed silent.
So our cappuccino finally arrived and it was fine, not exceptional but not a problem to us. We waited another 20 mins before I saw my avocado toast. You can see from my picture it was made in real rush, it looked really disappointing given the price and the wait... the plate itself was nice but not the food on it. I had no clue how that "dish" could make us wait 90 mins.
Anyway I started eating and soon tasted something weird from the avo. I had another bite and wondered what could have been added in the avo. So I asked the waitress to advise the ingredients of my toast. She looked puzzled and I asked if she knew what dish it was. She confessed she didn't even know what food it was on my plate.
Then the boss came to ask us what happened. I said I tasted almond in the avo so I asked her for ingredients. He said lemon, avocado (indeed). I said I tasted something weird, maybe that's a special recipe I didn't know but that something really tasted "special".... He snapped without hesitation, just saying "It's okay I can make a new one for you. Don't worry!" I said it might not be necessary. If that's your special recipe I can continue. He insisted on taking my plate off the table.
I was gobsmacked, not because of the food quality but his response. He didn't respond the customers properly, after having us to wait for like 90 mins for my food.. I didn't even complain. I know he was busy. I was politely asking for his recipe. That's it. I said nothing about the look of the food.
My husband's all day breakfast arrived like 10 mins later. It was also below average. He replaced the toast by "Belgian crepe" but that looks nothing like Belgian at all... It was really like made by kids. Totally not presentable for restaurants. We were "lucky" we had not topped up other more expensive things.
When the boss was re-making my avocado sourdough, another customer said he had been waiting too long and he wanted a refund. The boss didn't decline. He knew his service was really far too slow! And I regretted for not doing the same. I still had trust in the restaurant.
Then my 2nd avocado toast arrived. The avocado was at least in green colour not beige this time, and that tasted avo.
But look at those cheese slice, the whole presentation was just POOR! Look at the Cafe name - are they sure they're selling Scandinavian vibe?!
We left soon after we had finished everything.
The bill was like $350-400. Not up to standard at all.
