It’s not your typical lukewarm gruel and goo.

If only we can upload the video. The steamy, bubbly crab porridge came out piping hot in the clay pot. Instantly elevating the humble Teochew rice slurry to social media gold.

Note: it’s not the mushy-squashy type, they went the soup-rice (湯飯) style.

Over the years, congee and porridge have been my go-to comfort food for the gut, in winter days or summer nights. This one didn’t disappoint. The umami-flavoured crab essence was well-infused into the broth. Brownie points too, for the generous dose of brown meat.

The clay-pot crab congee could come in two different portions. If you are ordering one or two more side dishes, the medium pot size would be ideal for two.

Priced at HKD 9.8 or USD 1.2*, the oyster cake is a definite steal.

*An add-on price. The omelette set you back some HKD78 if you didn’t order a main dish.

The sample displayed at its entrance was no cheat. We were taken aback by the sheer size of a platter-full omelette when served.

The oyster cake could be served with extra splashes of fish sauce. But the chef has made it savoury enough. That’s thanks to the rich, succulent fillings of fresh briny mini oysters.

You can’t complain much with HKD 9.8. Still, we wish the seasoned batter could be less starchy. Just a bit more crispy omelette fringes would offer much more interesting layering to the gummy, starchy bits of the seafood restaurant staple.

To my dismay, this exemplifies every way a stinky tofu could go wrong. The coating, too thick and chunky — none of that expected layered textures of outer crisps and soft inside. I couldn’t bear to bring it down my throat.

You have better options at food stalls nearby e.g. “Fun Hing Hong” on Wing On Street or along Kat Hing Street.

Still, the best thing here is the people.

The free (羅漢果) herbal drinks may not cost much. It’s their thoughts that count.

Choose al-fresco seats if possible. People-watching is a great treat.
