Seeing the good reviews in Openrice regarding their afternoon tea sets, I was holding a pretty high expectation on their food quality. Knowing they are promoting the autumn tea series of afternoon tea sets, I made a reservation instantly.

Afternoon tea theme this time was a collaboration with Tea Cháteau, signature their special tea drinks and infusing variety flavours in their food. We have requested their chrysanthemum pu'er and osmanthus oolong.

Afternoon tea canapés weren't presented as the menu displayed while it was presented in traditional layers. Didn't give a big wow factor, mostly because the food colour wasn't as vibrant.

Garlic beef cubes were terrible. One was tough while the other one was rubbery. Not sure what cut it was as menu didn't show. For sure overcook. No garlic flavour but savoury. Sprinkled with spring onions. It was a terrible start.

Flying fish roe, shrimp and egg salad on toast In Chrysanthemum Pu'er Tea flavour was another disappointment. Apart from whole dish had no tea flavour, shrimp was too soft to the point mushed while biting. Fish roe was bland. Egg salad was a saucy one. Just a typical egg salad. Will be much tastier if adding herbs or cracked black pepper. Toast at least crunchy and toasted.

Uji matcha tea seaweed fried shrimp roll was the most disappointing canapés among four. Neither tea flavour nor deep fried flavour could be tasted or seen. It wasn't battered at all. Seaweed was chewy. Shrimp paste was rubbery like fish ball. It was tasteless. Neither could I taste the shrimp nor the seaweed. It was truly a disaster.

Korean strawberry and tuna tart was finally put to right among the savouries. Tuna cubes were marinated with a hint of strawberry. Fishy and light with a hint of strawberry flavour. Crust was a perfect shortbread crust. Both were perfectly matched. A delightful bite.
Base on their crust, I hope the upcoming sweets would be more promising.

Osmanthus oolong mousse cake was light and floral. Osmanthus was visually on the cake's top layer. Not much oolong tea flavour but osmanthus. Cake was very airy. Appreciated the cake wasn't cream base. Mousse was smooth but not much tea or floral taste, just sweet.

Uji matcha and korean strawberry madeleine cake was surprisingly good. I was expecting some kind of strawberries extract or fresh strawberry mixing with the cake batter, in fact a matcha madeleine coated with strawberry chocolate. Madeleine was buttery while balanced so well with the bitterness of matcha. Strawberry chocolate gave the sweetness for the whole cake. It was finally a delicious sweetness.

Uji matcha tea and cheese tart was another saving bite. Apart from no cheese flavour or texture tasted, personally I would describe as crème. Tart crust again promising. Buttery and perfect shortbread crust. Matcha mousse was incredibly smooth. Earthy with a hint of sweetness. Crumbly cookie texture with buttery flavour matched paired so well with the bitterness of the matcha flavour. It was a nice one.

Korean strawberry scone was not bad. Not too dense nor dry, kept its crumble. Clotted cream was served in two flavours, matcha and strawberry. Matcha was smooth and again a strong matcha earthy taste. Matched well with the scone while strawberry one, not much flavour. Scone had no strawberry flavour except the pink colour. It's just an original scone with pink colouring.

Chrysanthemum pu'er and osmanthus oolong tea were calming and aromatic. It was delightful to pair with afternoon tea canapés.

Overall, it's such a shame that both Tea Chateau flavours and monkey's café signature couldn't be highlighted. I could tell their desserts delivered were with quality and matcha ones were well balanced, nevertheless savoury fare definitely requiring improvements. Or else, deliver their signatures instead. Great pity.
