The weather was cooler and I decided to have ramen at Zagin Soba as it was near my home and I didn't want to go far after doing errands.I love Zagin Soba. I love Zagin Soba. Serving ramen with a thick and creamy chicken broth, it's always hits the spot. Personally, one of the best chicken broth ramen in Hong Kong as it doesn't feel oily like some places I've been.
But when I came for lunch that day, I saw they had a limited time ramen featuring beef broth. I remember having this last year so I ordered it again as it wouldn't be here for long.
They have a limited amount of bowls. Ten to be precise. Five during the day and five at night. Price? $198 and only available in November. It seems the price has decreased some what from last time.
The bowl arrived with four slices of beef. The last time they did this, they used A5 wagyu. This time they used A4 wagyu. Which means less fat content. But it was still tender, yet had a much stronger beef taste. Something I appreciated more. Less oily, more flavor. There is also a nice amount of diced red onion for crunch and a peppery shiso leaf to balance out everything. I also found one slender asparagus.
The noodles were the thick kind. Chewy but not overly hard. It clung to the soup well.
And the soup .... a nice clear broth but the taste of the beef was strong this time. It was a lot more rich and deep. It seemed they have improved this time around! The last time they had it was pretty good but this time ... the broth was better. Heartier. Richer. Stronger. Without being oily and too filling.
I think I've been a regular here since it opened and I always seem to like sitting at the bar so I could watch the chef in action. He tends to take the time to chat if it's not too busy. I found out that they are planning to expand into China with a new opening in Beijing. So, that means they have three locations outside Japan. Things you learn when you talk the to chef. Tip to always sit at the bar.
