We've been to Kitchen J two times; the most recent being tonight. The first time, we had to wait at least 15 minutes for a table which isn't too bad, but it looked like they were understaffed and therefore there were tables available, they just couldn't clear them quick enough. The second time we had no wait. The first time we had the ribs which are on the specials menu and a salad with teriyaki beef. The first time we had the ribs which are on the specials menu and a salad with teriyaki beef. The salad was quite good, but the ribs were pretty fatty and the meat didn't really fall of the bone. The service was fair, considering they were short handed.
However tonight, we ordered the penne bolognese and the seafood spaghetti. It took 30 minutes for the penne to arrive and about 35 minutes for the spaghetti. I had about finished the penne by the time the second dish came out and that was after reminding the staff that we were missing our second dish. Both dishes were decent, but definitely not special enough that you couldn't get something comparable at many places. We had a coupon for a free ice cream dessert so we ordered that and the coffee that came with our dinner set plus we asked for the bill because we noted how slow they were. After several minutes we got the coffee and then the ice cream. Neither should have taken very long to prepare. However, the bill didn't come. We finished the coffee and dessert and still no bill. We were about to leave money on the table and walk when we were finally able to flag down a waitress and ask about the bill. We finally got the bill, paid and left.
As we left, there was a line of people outside waiting to be seated.
The service is definitely lacking. I don't know if they don't have enough people waiting tables or cooking or both, but they can't keep up with the orders. I noted that several other tables had an issue where entrees came out at different times, leaving some customers without food as the others at their table were served.
The food is pretty good, but as I noted, nothing special. But why would I return to deal with the poor service when I can get the same quality food at other places?
