As the weather suddenly grew cooler, boyfriend and I went with his mother and sister for chicken hotpot near where they live.

爺爺雞煲皇 is located in San Po Kong, an area with a number of hotpot places. We walked by this and someone gave us a flyer to said we should give them a try as they were new in the area but they had an original branch in Kwun Tong that was quite popular. Boyfriend recognized the name from jars of chili sauce that he often sees in stores. He asked if they were the same and the staff said yes. Their chili sauce was pretty popular. With all this, we decided to give it a try.

The place is not very big. Menu is in Chinese only. There is no English.

Offering chicken hotpot, we chose a whole chicken with a mild spiciness for $208.  When it arrived, the staff said it was ready to eat. The chicken was delicious. Moist and tender. It was a bit spicy with that numbing pepper taste. The onions were also really soft and sweet.

After eating most of the chicken, we started in on hot pot. Ordering hotpot ingredients is by a check off form. We ordered a number of things but I will only note what I think was worth noting.

The beef was excellent quality. A good balance of fat to meat. It was tender and not tough even when we boiled it away in the soup.

The deep fried beancurd was crispy and fresh. It didn't seem like it was outsourced from some where else.

We had a round of beef balls. These were firm and bouncy.

They also had snacks so we ordered this. Deep fried tofu ($48). This was really addictive and goes really well with a beer. The tofu was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Perfectly seasoned it was like eating potato chips.

The star of the show was obviously the chicken and the sauce it was cooked in. The hotpot ingredients were fairly good, too. The place (though small) was fairly clean. Would return again.
