Happy Valentine's Day! We celebrated this year's Valentine's Day at Ho Lan Jeng because we would like something more casual for the night. This was my second time visiting and their food never disappoints. Ho Lan Jeng is definitely my first choice for Hong Kong fusion food and I think they did a great job in creating fusion cuisines. This was my second time visiting and their food never disappoints. Ho Lan Jeng is definitely my first choice for Hong Kong fusion food and I think they did a great job in creating fusion cuisines.
To begin with, we ordered a drink for each of us. I ordered the Sesame Mochi HK Cocktail and my boyfriend ordered Osmanthus Honey HK Cocktail. The sesame cocktail (sesame whiskey and peanut foam) has a strong taste of both sesame and peanut. They even have a small mochi attached so it looks like a sesame dessert to me. If you like both sesame and peanut, then this cocktail is highly recommended !! We ordered two dishes only for the night. The first dish was the squid salad.
Poached local squid salad in "Sichuan Spicy Style", mini buffalo Mozzarella, Thai Pomelo 'n' Chinese Fried Dough Stick Croutons.
The name of the dish was quite self-explanatory I think. It was quite fresh and the mini Mozzarella pieces definitely gave the salad an extra touch. You can see that the dish has a mix of Chinese, Italian, Thai, and Hong Kong-style food and the combination of these makes a great appetizer. Slow Cooked 24 hours Iberico Char-Siu, Pickled Red Onion, 65C egg with Aromatic Pork Fat Spring Onion Oil Akita Komachi Rice. (option to add $80 for Foie Gras)
In short, this was char-siu rice with pouched egg. The Iberico Char-Siu was decently cooked and it was fantastic. The slow-cooked Cha-Siu was juicy and the crust outside was just right. I would say this dish can be shared among 2-3 people, so make sure you don't order too much if you want to try this.
Aside from the good food that we enjoyed, there were some disappointments. The restaurant ran out of a lot of food on the day and we expected them to stock up more knowing it was going to be a busy night. We would like to order their dessert of the day but it was sold out. We also want to try the add-on of Foie Gras for our char-siu rice but they ran out of it. It was a bit disappointing but overall experience was great. The staff members were extremely helpful and kind despite being a full house busy night.
