It was my friend’s birthday a few days ago so we decided to go eat something nice after church. Conveniently she felt like eating white people food (lol) that day so I suggested visiting Café Deadend which is a place I’ve wanted to visit for a while. It was pretty darn hard to find though – took us a 10+ minute walk upslope on a hot sunny day. This place is small – even with the tables & chairs they put outside they could probably only fit around 20ish people?
Sorry I had to blur out all the faces in this picture because everyone didn’t look too attractive in it

The menu was B&W plain text printed on a wrinkled piece of folded paper that was starting to fall apart. I understand the minimalistic idea behind it but perhaps they’re taking it too far? Also, food is quite expensive averaging at around $100 per dish. Choices are pretty limited as well.
We both ordered the B.E.L.T. @ $95 each.

-Since my mouth wasn’t big enough to eat it as a sandwich I ate all the layers separately. It was DELICIOUS!
-Let’s start with the bun – baked in house and it was one of the best sandwich buns I’ve ever had. Thin crusty layer on the outside but when I bit into it the inside was VERY fluffy and not chewy at all! It also wasn’t dry and went well with the mustard aioli.
-As you can see from the big the egg was perfectly fried sunny side up. Runny yolk and all + perfectly seasoned.
-The lettuce & tomatoes were fresh and crispy with no bitter taste
-The bacon was also done well! For some reason whenever I have bacon in HK they tend to be undercooked and soggy. This was cooked until crispy but not burnt.
-It also came with a small side of yoghurt with grapes. I found it weird to eat yoghurt with grapes :s Also they used vanilla yoghurt which I thought was too sweet and would have preferred plain yoghurt instead.
Since it was so hot that day we didn’t get coffee and ordered some cold drinks instead. Limonata San Pellegrino for my friend ($25) and house-made Lemon Ginger for me, $45!!!

My lemon ginger was pretty mild – seems like they’ve only slightly infused the two ingredients with water. Very refreshing indeed but I was expecting something heavier/sweeter. Also $45 is way too expensive for this glass (barely 3/4 filled).
We saw tables next to us ordering other desserts and they looked very very very good. We had our minds set on ice cream though so we didn’t order any – I’d definitely come back next time though.
They had an in-house bakery next door and I went in to get some to take home. The English-speaking server there was rather unpleasant - gave us attitude when we asked questions and looked like she didn’t want to be there at all. I hope she’s not the owner.
Anyway, I bought the Oolong & Fig Loaf ($50) and a Mushroom Brioche ($25). Considering the size of the bread it was VERY expensive but I decided to give it a try anyway. (I forgot to take photos). The Oolong & Fig was alright, a bit too dry and I didn’t register too much tea taste in the bread. I think the figs were too sweet and overpowered it. On the other hand, the Mushroom Brioche was DELICIOUS!!! Rich and buttery brioche and the mushroom filling was creamy but retained its texture. Although it’s expensive but I highly recommend it. So yummy!
