Honeymoon Dessert has sure come a long way. With the one little dessert shop in Sai Kung where it was a must eat dessert place after a long extensive hike to a big chain of dessert shops throughout Hong Kong including food courts! It has now evolved into something else. First there was the opening of a healthy juice bar in CitySuper called The Juicery. But now here comes something else all together. Located in Hysan Place, it is located where Holly Brown once was.Layout was a nice wood design and more like a cafe in style. As it was peak lunch time in Causeway Bay, this was fairly empty and I needed to eat anyways, I decided to try it for lunch.
They had a lunch menu that costs $98 for pasta or $88 for pizza. Menu is in English and Chinese and there is no 10% service charge. Set includes a main, drink and dessert.
For those that want something healthy, they have a mason jar salad and power juice set $82.
I decided to order the pasta set for $98. While waiting for my meal to be prepared, I noticed this: corn on the cob in strange flavors. One even included marshmallows. I'm a bit confused why this would seem appealing to anyone?
Ice Cube Coffee Latte. I chose this as my drink and the coffee was made into ice cubes. There was a flask of hot milk (it was very hot!) where you pour over the cubes and it will melt. There was also a jar of sugar syrup. It was definitely fun and I could understand the concept of freezing your coffee so it didn't get watered down if you put ice cubes in it. Tastewise, if you are a coffee lover, this is not for you as it tasted more like the coffee you get at a cha chan teng. If you like cha chan teng coffee or you're just not picky, then this was pretty fun.
Spaghetti with Ox Cheeks Braised in Red Wine Sauce. My main was this. When it arrived, the waitress gave me a pair of chopsticks. She informed me that Honeymoon Dessert suggests we eat spaghetti with chopsticks but forks are available if you really want to use that instead. Um...ok? Weird. I did the chopsticks because why not? I've eaten pasta with chopsticks at home when I'm making my own pasta and just want to reuse the chopsticks I used to stir my pasta sauce, thus reducing clean up. Anyways ... the pasta was surprisingly good. It was not only al dente (something I fear in a Chinese operated restaurant) but the ox cheeks were so tender, they literally fell apart. The sauce was not rich enough and had too much tomato flavor. It tasted more like the sauce they use for spaghetti bolognese at local cha chan tengs.
Coconut Milk Sago. Dessert arrived after I finished my meal. Impressed with service at this point as they really did wait until I was finished with my meal before dessert came out. I chose this because ... hey, when at Honeymoon Dessert, always have their coconut milk sago! It's really the best! Famous for their desserts, this didn't disappoint. A really good end to lunch.
Service was really good. I think it was new and the place was empty so the staff did take time out to ask how the meal went. I don't know how this will be in the future when it gets more popular. For a dessert place, I was impressed that the savory dishes were fairly good as well. Price was fairly reasonable. Though more like a pricier cha chan teng but I think that's all the rage right now. To make cha chan tengs more hip for those of us who feel intimidated eating at one. I will return.
