Umami offers a great experience to diners. It has a nice Japanese zen garden vibe, and the food is also authentically Japanese (and sourced from many different parts of japan) - it’s minimalist, ingredient-focused food, nothing over the top or fussy. The service was friendly albeit a little slow - we really had to adjust from the usual hectic pace of Hong Kong to appreciate it. But I liked that cyberport itself is a serene area of the city. The food was excellent. I’ll list and rate all the items

I’ll list and rate all the items we had:
1. Spicy toro roll: I was actually disappointed at the look of the roll as I thought it was nothing special given it’s price. That changed as soon as I took the first bite because it was melt in your mouth good. Simple and amazing
2. Pork yakitori - this was quite a fatty piece of meat but the cook was so good and the flavors reminded me of Japan. It is one of their signature items so don’t miss it
3. Udon with mixed tempura. This was our only hearty dish - as the other plates were quite small I would recommend to order this to round the meal off. The soup base was a light flavorful soy while the udon was chewy and not overly starchy which I loved. The tempura was a good assortment of veggies and two jumbo prawns and they were cooked perfectly
4. Unagi nigiri. Also another classic dish executed perfectly
5. Clam consommé. This was a transparent broth with amazing clam flavor. It had some tofu and seaweed and was a good start to the meal
6. Spicy octopus and cucumber salad. I loved the flavor of this dish. If you love something spicy this is by far the spiciest item on their menu (without over the top spice) the only negative for me was that the octopus was too chewy. This was the only item on the list that I believe was not perfectly cooked
7. Miso cod. While this fish was cooked perfectly, it was just way too sweet. It was sweeter than teriyaki and at parts the miso glaze was almost like a candy. Everything else about the dish was great it was just too sweet for me, I tried adding a bit of wasabi to offset the sweetness but that did not work well together either. It was an expensive dish too so I’d skip it next time.

Overall, this is a good place for a treat. Authentic Japanese food with a cool and calm vibe. It is quite a splurge though - around $700 per person not including drinks
