We arrived at about 1pm on a Sunday and there was already a very long queue outside. The waiter told us to return in about 30 mins. I thought it would still be worth the wait if what my friends said about this place was true. But then, it turned out my friends living locally were way off.

When we were seated, our group of 10 decided to order all the dishes that this restaurant is famous for - deep-fried frog's legs, crab congee, deep-fried fish balls, deep-fried cuttle fish, steamed eel in black bean sauce and a couple of others. I didn't want to take any chances so I ordered a 7-up with the intention of neutralising the effects of any MSG that the dishes might contain. Sadly, this preventive measure was inadequate.

The first to arrive was the frog's legs. The batter was thick, tasteless and oily. To make the dish worse, the batter was so think in some areas that the frog's legs were simply more than chewy. For the ones that weren't, the meat was tastless, obviously of the frozen kind. The crab congee was another disappointment, the congee was bland with no taste of the crab; the crab itself was again tasteless. The sauce that came with the eel was full of flavour but the eel pieces were chewy, tasteless and overcooked. The deep-fried fish balls were probably the best of all the dishes but they were still a far cry from the better ones found in Hong Kong. The other dishes were not even worthy of mention.

Despite having drowned myself in 2 cans of 7-up, I left the restaurant feeling the effects of the MSG on my face. This restaurant has probably drowned in its own success and was simply using MSG to cover up its inadequacies.
