[ Katsuo Udon | 長沙灣 ]I have wanted to try this place for SO long because I love udon and this place makes their own in the back kitchen and is known for being chewy and perfect. Wanted the wheat one but it was sold out 😐, so had to get the original one.
The udon noodles are super thick, chewy and elastic. Perfect for people who love chewy udon noodles (me) not so fun for people whole like softer noodles (my mother) 😂. The portion is also quite filling and large as each noodle is really long and thick.
The dipping sauce is also perfectly flavored, not dilute nor too salty. I left the noodles in it for around 1 minute each time and it coated the noodles really well. I also recommend adding some egg yolk into your dipping sauce (if you order the oden as well) as it makes the sauce incredibly creamy and sticks to the udon much better. The ginger and wasabi didn’t really change the sauce a lot except give it a temporary zing.
The oden 🍢 is a perfect side to this meal. It has a cabbage roll, chikuwa, hard boiled egg, radish and a piece of konnyaku. The soup is really delicious as well. Light but super savory, I drank the whole bowl 😝.
Cabbage roll 🥬 is filled with fish and pork paste. The paste is really tender and smooth, not firm or like a meatball at all. Big piece of cabbage that soaked up the stock well, bit hard to bite through the stem of the cabbage as it was quite fibrous and crunchy. The chikuwa 🍥 is also very tender and flavorful, not that chewy though.
The radish is really big and the stock seeped into the whole thing, yet it still remained somewhat firm. Sadly was a bit cold. The konnyaku is really chewy and jelly like, with a slight crunch to it as well. I personally really enjoy this but some people do not. But the piece is quite small as well.
The hard boiled egg 🥚 was also very well marinated and even some of the egg yolk had the dashi flavor. Mixing some egg yolk into the stock was delicious 👍. Big egg as well.

💬 Overall, loved the chewy and thick udon noodles, as well as the dipping sauce and oden. Highly recommend for people who like chewy, firm noodles. I was disappointed I didn’t get to seat at the bar table and watch the chef make the noodles but it was located at the adjacent store and we went into the one with a register counter first 😅. Don’t make the same mistake as us if you want to watch them make the udon.
