Lemon Chia Seed Pancakes (HK$118) with almond condensed milk, seasonal fruit jam and organic maple syrup. The pancakes were rather dry while the flavors could be stronger. To be honest, I'm not into the whole raw food movement so I rather eat some good old fluffy pancakes with rich flavors especially for the price. I think the food here is not bad but just not for everyone. J was screaming of hunger afterwards - oops that'd teach me to drag a carnivorous hubby to a trendy vegetarian cafe.

This afternoon, much to the initial shock and dismay of my carnivore husband, our friend suggested a hipster, vegetarian restaurant as the venue for our lunch meet-up. Fortunately, this understated little place was able to satisfy even the starving, skeptical meat-eater, who had originally planned on needing a second lunch, after being a good sport to come to a vegetarian dig.
Grassroots' new location at 108 Hollywood Road, is nestled quietly between the glitzy CentreStage building, and the ever-bustling Classified restaurant. I understand the restaurant has recently moved from its smaller, original shop in Sai Ying Pun. The restaurant interior, at the same time modern and bohemian, creates a chill, earthy atmosphere which remains true to Grassroots concept. The menu has items to cater for pretty much any special dietary requirement - gluten free, vegan, nut free, dairy free, buddha friendly... you name it.
We ordered several items off the brunch menu - cast iron baked eggs (not bad), a vegetarian rendang and roti canai (fresh and creative), and a truffle mushroom whole wheat linguine. For me, the linguine was just divine- thoughtfully designed and executed with love - it really stole the show.
This type of modern, healthy diet concept theme is nothing new to the restaurant scene in Hong Kong: similar competitors which immediately come to mind are Locofama in SaiYingPung, and Herbivore in Soho. However, what sets this place apart is that it is not only a good 'vegetarian restaurant', it's a good restaurant, period. What I've found at some of these healthy concept joints is that a variety of supplementary ingredients and techniques to mask the 'healthiness', are used to serve a tasty dish, despite the fact that the ingredients are healthy. Put simply, if you deep fry, and then add a bunch of cheese on top, you can probably make a sponge taste good. At Grassroots, you'll like the food because of those natural and high quality ingredients, which taste great and allowed to shine through in their own right.
I chatted briefly with the young, lovely owner, and I don't know her personally, but you can taste the thought and love she has put into every item on the menu.  The love and attention devoted to each detail, including the refreshing coconut sugar served with coffee - is admirable and refreshing.

This restaurant may not appeal to every palate, that's for sure, but I think it's a place worth at least one visit for all food-lovers. This joint will, if nothing else, earn a nod of approval from anyone who appreciates a little #foodlove.

If I had to leave one criticism, the service was really average at best. Our waiter made us feel rushed to leave the table, and while I understand the need to squeeze in another round of service, this attitude did detract from my experience.
