The stir fry and preserved vegetables on the salad bar and as sides were also refreshing. As for the mains, the cold soba noodles with beef and egg white was quite al dente despite I found it slightly too spicy. The seaweed and oyster soup was traditional, tasty and not too salty. The grilled abalone was tender and the prawn was fresh. The beef was well marinated. With an additional $45 one could get fresh fruits and salads from the salad bar - the pineapples were ripe and sweet. Though there was a cake cutting fee, it only amounted to $300 per head - the perks of being a Jockey Club member!

Finally tried out the steak that our dinner party missed on the last occasion. The cooked lobster was very fresh and tasted almost sweet like fine seafood always did. The steak was prime and trumped the ribeye; our opinion was that we should have skipped the wagon. All in all the beef went well with red wine. The sides were nice and the mashed potatoes and pumpkins were genuine farm produce - so scarce from restaurants nowadays. The squid ink pasta with seafood was quite satisfactory - al dente and rich. The dessert was the most disappointing part of the meal, it was good old-fashioned brownie with vanilla ice cream, but with the smarties and chocolates it was positively childish. Fortunately the quality of the coffee was up to scratch. $500 per capita was very fair to say the least, and it was a wonderful undoing to erase the uneasy aftertaste of the last visit.

This was a dinner invitation by an expert gourmet as the Ladies Purse at the Shatin Jockey Club was promoting a Japanese cuisine special by guest chef Mitsuru Tamaki and his Okinawa-based team. We started off with two appetizers; the pan-fried dumpling was nothing out of the ordinary, in contrast to the wagyu beef salad - the beef slices were tender and juicy, and not too fat-laden considering it was wagyu. Next came the two main courses worthy of accolade.

The assorted sashimi were of the highest standards, with immaculate taste and freshness pronounced at every bite. When complemented with sushi rice, the inherent freshwater or brine flavour was accentuated.

The Wagyu beef was amazing; seeing it gracefully cut from the loaf and prepared into glistening dices which yielded the richest taste and melted in one's mouth was fantastic (and guilt-laden with the sheer gluttony).

The other traditional homely dishes were quality food but rather plain compared to the awe-inspiring cuisine above. The pork ramen was "al dente", the preserved radishes crisp and zesty and went well with scrambled eggs, the charcoal grilled chicken indeed tasted of carbons and the bitter gourd was piquant - a specialty from Okinawa.

The same could be said of the desserts; the sea salt ice cream was interesting and not too sweet, the sweet dumpling with sesame paste was the usual Chinese restaurant genre, the cheesecake was slightly too heavy and the green tea mousse cake was nice though a bit sweet.

All in all, I would revisit for the sashimi and the wagyu beef - but not the other dishes.

I have been here many many times especially for their weekend dinner buffets, but on my last visit, I ordered:
Wonton with Ho-fun noodles ($38)
Bread pudding with vanilla movenpick ($30+18)
Coffee ($21 including unlimited refill)

Wontons:
The wontons here are made by the chef everyday, and they do not have fatty pork in them, just wholesome bouncy shrimps. It was served with their own (I presume) XO sauce which made it even more delicious. The broth was flavourful without the addition of MSG.

Bread pudding:
This was baked to order with a side of vanilla sauce. It was your ordinary baked bread pudding (albeit served in a tiny souffle cup) which was better eaten with the Movenpick ice cream, but nothing 'wow' about it.

The Coffee here is excellent. I stay away from their cappuccino after being disappointed many times for tasting like a latte and having just a dollop of foam =(. Comes with a home-made butter cookie - delicious when dipped in!

The service here is excellent, they tend to remember the names of all regulars!
