One year in my University, I had a two-month stay in Indonesia for a voluntary programme. Thanks to my innate skin colour, there had been times I was wrongly recognized as an Indonesian. All those jokes (but back then, embarrassments and anger) have developed an inexplicable crush on Indonesia in me. Indonesian cuisine always distinguishes itself with all kinds of robust spices and intense flavours. They add chiliesin basically all food. Since most of the Indonesian are Muslim, prohibited to eat
Indonesian cuisine always distinguishes itself with all kinds of robust spices and intense flavours. They add chilies
in basically all food. Since most of the Indonesian are Muslim, prohibited to eat pork, raft of their dishes are made with beef. One of my favourite foods back then was beef Rendang, which was originated from Indonesia, especially in favour by the ethnic group of Minangkabau.
In Hong Kong, there are quite a number of Indonesian restaurants, but I have never found one as authentic as those I ate in Indonesia, probably because it was very time-consuming. My sudden strong urge for beef Rendang had been churning hard these days, so I searched and went to this hidden gem – Malayan Restaurant – which is open only for lunch on weekdays and leaves the remaining time for preparation of food. Centering on presenting the authentic Malaysian cuisine, the owner learnt from wet markets and restaurants in Malaysia and even from her Malaysian grandfather. Sounds hearty enough.
Tucked away in a quiet corner of a commercial building in Chai Wan, the little studio was hardly decked, merely
with a Malaysian flag and portraits of Malaysian tigers on a brown-orange wall of one side and a signage “馬來西亞春色綠野景緻艷雅” on a cyan wall of the other side.
The decoration was simple but enough to reveal the South East Asian vibes. Arrived at 12 noon alone, I was very lucky to get the last seat. Out of my utmost expectation, it took 45 minutes before the food was served. So guys, either you have to arrive real early or you are ready to be super late for work!
Beef Rendang garlic rice (lunch set with drink $64) [Rated 7.9/10]
I was very hangry (hungry + angry) with the endless waiting. But when the food was served, the irresistible fragrances and the vibrant colours of food swiped all my anger away. It definitely looked and smelled right!

When I sampled the first mouthful…That taste of HOME (Ooops sorry should be INDONESIA) I had been mesmerized! Jus was of no doubt one of the best found in town - various ingredients such as ginger, lemongrass, garlic, shallot, chills and Malaysian spices were ground to paste before being braised with beef and coconut milk. The concoction was slowly cooked for hours until caramelizing around the beef like tiny cubes, tensely stuffed with gamy aromas.

The beef was undoubtedly very moreish. The only blight, though, was the tenderness. Only if the beef could be a bit tenderer and more succulent would the dish be perfect.
The garlic rice looked so right in dark brown that I knew it would be another highlight I cannot miss! And I was right!! A super flavourful bowl of rice, fried with sauté garlic and soy sauce, revealed a divine hint of chicken grease, completely whipping my appetite. The dish was complemented with anchovies, peanuts, boiled egg, cucumber and traditional chili paste, ordinary but compulsory to give the final kick to the dish. As a no-rice person, I literally mopped the single last grain off the bowl!
This beef Rendang has blatantly shredded light on how Rendang is different from those ordinary curries, a misconception people always have. It is definitely worth a try if you have plentiful time!
