You may be surprised how icecream cones can never go out of style, while the 'really good for you' frozen yoghurt has been on a roller coaster ride ever since it landed in Hong Kong. Apollo, the icecream brand once have their machine-made-to-order, "you pick your own fruit " frozen yoghurt cone everywhere. Now the only place you can find that cone is a corner tucked away in the most unknown place in Causeway Bay. I wondered if it's still there. Then TCBY hit us and was everywhere, again, overnight. And by the end of this overnight storm they have completely disappeared yet again, like it has never left any traces at all. You wouldn't be any more surprised to hear that BERRYGOOD is decalring war on grounds for frozen yoghurt back again, and this time, the back-in-vogue dessert is going to hit right to basics.
Located at the top of Graham street market, BERRYGOOD is located right off Hollywood Road. Hard to miss the store as the entire decor (inside and out) is all white, with 3 eye catching paintings on the wall, and a few stools of fluorescent colours. BERRYGOOD is serving up a simple thing -- frozen yoghurt with toppings of your choice.
3 sizes to choose from, ranging from $30 for small (1 topping), $38 for medium (2 toppings) and a larger one with more toppings. (40 some dollars). A firm believer that icecream or frozen desserts are fine on their own, as toppings often cloud our tastebuds into something that we are not supposed to taste. But the greed from inside of us often are tempted to have as many add-ins as possible. That, I believe is part of human nature -- the more the merrier.
There is plain frozen yoghurt, strong flavors of dairy assures you that there really is milk in it, unlike many icecream cones these days when you have vanilla icecream all you can taste is sugar and a fake vanilla aftertaste. None of that. Instead you will have a milky texture smooth and silky. I have also sampled the peach swirl, which is confusingly white in color and a rather artificial peach taste much like a cheap peach yoghurt with no peach in it. Think about blindfolding yourself to sample different flavours, I imagine it wouldn' t taste any more peachy than icecream that's a little tart and sweet at the same time.
Toppings, however, are equally important. The crowd in front of the queue are squealing with joy as the icecream lady scooping spoonfuls of gummy bears, chocolate chips, and strawberry dices into their yoghurt. I believe mango cubes and fresh blueberries stand in perfectly as you can convince yourself that this sweet treat is good for you. There is fruit, right? You can also choose almonds or whole pecans for the nuttier alternative.
it's a rather small joint with limited seating. Music is constantly on high volumes (but not deafening, which is good, and selection of music is rather tasteful!) I sure hope a place like BERRYGOOD could last longer than its predecessors. Then afterall BERRYGOOD, with its decor and everything intentionally stylish, is targeting a different crowd than those before it, and this crowd is willing to go an extra mile for a rarity you don't get to see all this often...Frozen yoghurt it is.
