Having yet to try their Italian buffet lunch, I'd come for a break over some dessert and coffee in the dining area on the 2nd floor.

Sicilian Cassata ($34) was ordered because of the many favourable reviews below. This brand of Italian desserts is popular among Italian eateries in HK - from its website this Cassata is described as "a slice of vanilla and chocolate ice cream with a cream and candied fruit centre". The look of it was reminiscent of the "tri-colour" ice cream that I used to have as a kid, now in a more sophisticated version. I think the vanilla part was on the outside and chocolate inside, and the innermost part tasted sort of almond-ly. I couldn't wait for it to thaw so it was rather chewy but that was the interesting part. The candied fruit was so-so, anyway I'm not a big fan of it.

Espresso ($20) was much better than the cappuccino I had at the other WC branch! (Probably because I'd lowered my expectation since then.) From Babedolphin's information they use another brand of coffee here (Casa Rinaldi) so I decided to give Il Bel Paese's coffee another chance. I was not disappointed. My espresso was smooth (maybe I shouldn't use this word but I mean it's kind to the palate),quite balanced - like a bit smoky/nutty but not too bold - and the after-taste was not overpowering. Not something you'd want for a morning pick-me-up but fine as an afternoon coffee. I even bought home a pack of the Amaretto which came with the espresso!

Yes...and don't miss its Amedei chocolates. I think Il Bel Paese has the most respectable range of them, yet my favourite remains to be the good ol' Toscano Black 70%, a great companion with coffee.

The sause tasted like something from a can, the seafood wasn't fresh and only had squid and little bits of cheap seafood, and the portion can be finished in 5 bits. It is cooked to order. So you'll have to wait another 10-15 minutes if you want another plate of a few bites of pasta. The fruit salads had flys on it so i chose to try they cake. The almond cake was not bad. I finished the meal with tea, since i dont drink coffee. Their tea came in a nice cup and pretty tea pot. However, it was a Liption's teabag. I heard their coffee is amazing. Too bad I dont drink Coffee. This is a place that I would not recommend.

This time I came and tried the SICILIAN CASSATA, although it is not the authentic version as Babedolphin saids, I quited liked it, I have not tried the real thing hence I can't compare it to anything,

I felt there was a name confusion, the wrapper saids Bindi (reminds me of okra and the indian Bindi dish, probably Bindi is the makers of the dessert).

Unwrapping the dessert reminded me of unwrapping butter, wrapped in tracing paper.

The dessert was distinctly sliced with a layer of yellow, brown, and the centre looking like tutti fruitti nougat. The whole thing tasted quite good, not two sweet, also the bitterness of the chocolate balanaced out the sweetness. If the orange peel was replaced with bits of orange I thought it would have tasted better.

The edge of the ice-cream was like dehydrated ice-cream, hard and chewy.

My coffee desire seems to have dropped dramatically though - I can survive on only 1-2 drinks every week, whereas I drank 3-4 per day in the past! And during summer I was coffee abstinate for 3 week intervals at a time!

Nowadays though, I NEVER ORDER ESPRESSO/RISTRETTO from unproven places and restaurants, unless they're proven coffee specialty houses. Milky drinks tend to hide away underlying flaws much easier! So anyway I can't tell you about the Espresso here, but I guess it could actually turn out good - but my Caffe Latte was definitely very drinkable!

It has a cashew nutty and quite a dry finish, the woody character in the background gave it an earthy aroma in the nose and on the palate. What I enjoyed the most was the 'layering' hidden within the quite good but not perfectly frothed milk - it was too hot, and it was nearly velvety enough but not there yet! However, the selection of beans for blending and their unique roasting style by CASA RINALDI in Italy was quite professional - the balance and complexity of this coffee is something that is difficult to find and achieve with locally roasted blends. Personally I think we still have a lot to learn from the Italians and other countries - so locally fresh isn't always better! (Think of how Sushi chefs will all be using local 'alive' fishes for sashimi now, instead of importing ’冰鮮' from Japan, if it was any good. Similar with Coffee.)

This is a typical, 'mid-tier plus' commercial Italian style coffee with a lot of 'body' and very little acidity nor bitterness. Its approachable by everyone! They also have higher end Coffee Blend Beans for sale, if you want to try make them at home!

Note: Other il Bel Paese shops use LAVAZZA for their coffees. Only this flagship outlet uses a Di Casa Gold blend from Casa Rinaldi, who also does sauces and olive oils, etc.

MID to HIGH '4'
A Rare Italian Coffee that has Complexity Within!

7.5 / 10 SICILIAN CASSATA (Frozen Version) -
Although they sell this in other outlets too, you really ought to eat this on a table with fork & spoon like a frozen parfait. This is one of my perennial favourite Italian desserts ! Its made of layered frozen zabliogne and chocolate gelati with some almond essence - a type of Semifreddi. The Inside is lined with dried candied fruit pieces. The version I love eating the most carries a liquer soaked red spongey ball in the centre, pity this is missing in this version. The candied fruits also lack a bit of their unique tutti-frutti-esque flavour...
Nevertheless its very likeable still and recommended but bear in mind its not the Miss Universe representation of this dessert. Some local restaurants also carry a frozen Cassata.. yet to try them.

7.0 / 10 TIRAMISU -
Available in a big tub as well as individual portions, I like the fact they use 'soaked' Savoiardi fingers rather than sponge or chiffon cakes as base. There was slight Liquor-infusion but its mainly Coffee based flavours. The Marscapone cheese flavour was a bit weak and in the fridge had set a bit harder than is smooth... Some people like them as an adult's version with a bit more liquer flavour (such as me! alway more alcohol!) but this version here is suitable for children which is good for worried parents....! Its not bad but can be better still.
8.0 / 10 CHINO -
Drank this San Pellegrino version of the 'Chinotto' - a type of fizzy, bittery citrus drink and is considered a Cola substitute and even shares a similar taste somewhat. This 'Chino' is relatively mild but some of the more traditional Italian Chinotto's have a very bitter finish, at least 3 times stronger than this... This is a much toned-down version which suits the sweet me haha!
. If you crave the authentic bitterness, this could be too weak - a strong Negroni does the job better.

******************
My 1st exposure to il Bel Paese deli was a few years ago when I discovered their 半山 shop 1 day, then on another trip later went to their Happy Valley store. Back then they didn't have as much dainty and rare imports - the collection just keeps getting better.. (Not sure if I remembered right but wasn't the 半山 outlet located a few shops up from where its now situated before? I remember it as substantially smaller?
)
Now its grown to offering a Buffet on the 2nd level and some simple a la carte salads/pastas and desserts on the 1st level.
I come here occasionally because some things aren't available at places even like GREAT, Oliver's or Citysuper: For one, the so-called FERARRI OF THE PARMA's, the famous Culatello Prosciutto is sold here in 'Cotto' cooked form and is 'THE HAM' to have in your lunch sandwich to make your colleagues jealous haha... and its ONLY available at il Bel Paese! If you want the cured not cooked version of Culatello as part of your cold meat platter, City Super carries that version but at 3 times the price its more expensive than San Daniele.
Although here and other shops don't carry my crazily beloved 'Aged' Pecorinos or Canestrato*
, which is great eaten alone and even more appropriate for topping a Pasta, Salad or Piadina/Sandwiches as its a highly flavoursome yet mildish sheep's cheese, unlike the sharper and brute Parmigiano Reggiano's/ Grana Padano..... - they sell a unique, softer Truffled Pecorino that is not found anywhere else except another joint in MK. *Castelmagno and Pecorino Romano are also good on pasta and available here!
Other stuff I find available at il Bel Paese which are rare include:
- UK version Potato Chips, Arancini Risotto Balls, Amedei Chocolate Range, my very beloved Cotechino Sausage's (or Zampone), Nut or Olive Oils and Aged Balsamics, unique Italian Spirits and Wines, San Daniele Parma, etc. Its like the equivalent of Monsier Chatte!
Can't praise enough about il Bel Paese - fingers crossed, they will make upgraded versions of better desserts and lasagnes and food for us Hongkies! I give them '5' for Imported Goods, '3' for Desserts

The head waiter is also an Italian guy I think, plus the chef Massimo (another gentleman by that name) was at the buffet station cooking. So definitely very Italian from the the looks of things.

The small space on the second floor of the building was almost full. I am not sure what it was, it could have been the various "professional-looking" people who greeted us on entry, the two-flight upward climb on pretty narrow wooden stairs, the low ceiling, brick floors, or cramped tables (I had the leg of my chair kicked/other patrons scraped pass several times). It was just the feel of the place that reminded me of a youth hostel/community hall/boarding school dining room. Light italian music was in the background, but it did almost nothing to lift that uneasy feeling. I sound like a whinger and maybe I am one, but it's something that flies in the face of Italianess, the quintessential cheery and homey cuisine.

The food, I am relieved to say, provided much more comfort. To sate my craving for proteins, and because the crowd at the salad/cold dishes section was pretty daunting, I made a beeline for the hot dishes. There were three on offer: small rectangles of cut-up lasagne, a roulade, and a cheese frittata with tomato sauce. I especially savoured the fact that they put a generous bowl of shaved parmesan next to the lasagne, very thoughtful indeed. The lasagne was the best of the lot, seasoned well with rosemary, layered with a good amount of meat and even some green peas, plus it was piping hot. The only problem if at all was that the lasagne pasta was a bit too soft for my liking, but of course it's difficult to bake and keep lasagne warm and not have to sacrifice the texture of the pasta in the process. The roulade (I suspect it was a braciola?) was the next good thing - tender but without losing it's meaty texture, and with an egg filling in the centre. The cheese frittata was the weakest, I couldn't discern any cheese in it and the outside was also a bit fried too brown, at least my piece was.

For the cold dishes, the leafy salad was the best I've had for a long time. The leaves were extremely fresh and crispy, and the rocket I think was the Italian variety and not the Australian one that has less bite. With a bit of balsamic and oil dressing, this was simple yet nice to eat (I wouldn't say delicious, but for just a few leaves it was close lol). Even the presentation of the salad bowl was very inviting - a good job of the person who put it altogether. Another winner was the onion soup - it was laden with onion and some potato cubes, and I was offloading the shaved parmesan into it
I only wished it was hotter and therefore even heartier. I also had two thin slices of garlic bread, one with black olive paste and a meaty paste (I couldn't tell what it was). I recall from my Italian classes long ago that this would be known as spuntini eaten in the afternoon, no matter, the taste of the olive paste was pretty decent, so I was not complaining. The seafood potato salad was also ok, with pieces of calamari, mussels and small prawns. The tomato pasta salad (trofie pasta) was the least impressive, although the texture was a perfect al dente.

This is however not the place if you are a sweet fiend. They had but only three dessert chioces, and I wouldn't count melon as one, so you only have two: a slice of plain cake and mini ramekins of panna cotta with a bit of strawberry. Despite the narrow choice, the panna cotta was probably one of the best I've had in Hong Kong - very creamy, quite some vanilla, and not too wobbly so that it was really a pudding, a fault I find with a lot of local renditions. Consistency was just right, and even the size was justifiable, as the taste was strong and rich. The cake was also not bad, very eggy and a bit retro - it reminded me of local bakeries way back when they used real eggs in their baking lol. Coffee was a crowd-pleasing "bimbo" blend (coffee drinkers would probably know what I mean here hehe), but at least the crema was quite respectable, although there was only a very weak/no after taste.

Still, the seriousness of the place was stifling - maybe because the big boss was there? I find this quite difficult to get over. At $130 with 10% service charge, it's not unreasonable to expect a few more warm smiles, more types of dessert (perhaps some biscotti?), and no one kicking the leg of your chair.

是日Pasta是Calabresi with Cauliflower & Taleggio.

So happy to see a massive Il Bel Paese in wanchai, a store on the ground floor and then a restaurant on the first floor.I entered the shop expecting the usual bakery, cheeses, and italians salad, then OMG I saw an array of crisps!! Walkers Salt n Vinegar, and Smiths Scampi and lemon and even Quavers, so I got them imediately, I havent had them for ages!!If they had the Smiths Cheese pockets, it would be great, but good enough already, and they have my favourite cous cous too!!!The price is quite

The price is quite reasonable too!

4) panna cotta + chocolate muffin-panna cot

1) minestrone

2) salad + bruschette

3) cannelloni w/ricotta & spinach + arancini + saddle of pork in casserole

4) panna cotta + chocolate muffin

i) coffee
