Ambience - lovely. Comforting designs of wooden panels, high ceiling, an open window to a quiet end of the street. Food wise - not that amazing, at least the lunch set was mediocre at most

- Coffee was strong, with milk steamed. most satisfying part of the meal

- dessert at choice of additional $30, bit pricey

All in all, ok for the lunch set price, but honestly better food quality at soho.
would recommend for a change of environment for soho-goers for an afternoon to chill but don't have too high expectations of the food.

這裡有八十八元的simple lunch,包括餐湯,自選主菜和飲品,加錢可以再選甜品.我當然是未出發先做好功課,知道這裡的Duck Liver and Egg值得一試,lemon tart也獲飲食雜誌選為城中最佳-愛吃檸檬的我,當然是要試試是不是真的那麼好吃了.

兩位友人都點了simple lunch,我則從a la carte menu中再點選了Grilled Pears Salad和Duck Liver and Egg.

是日餐湯是普通忌廉湯,味道一般.

主菜一客是意粉,另一客是Tuna Salad with Miso Dressing-但和想像的很不同,餐牌既然說是沙律,為什麼端上來的是吞拿魚扒一塊配沙律?

後來調查一下,只發現有種吞拿沙律叫seared ahi tuna salad,做法有點類似,是將吞拿魚肉只煎熟表面,切片,伴以沙律進食-但這天吃的又和查到的不同,直到現在還未找到答案,如果大家知道為甚麼,請告訴我!

吞拿魚扒厚厚的一件,賣相不佳,但切開看見只是半熟而且肉質不韌,也令我們放心下來.吞拿魚扒以味噌醬塗抹過再煎香,所以外皮既香脆又惹味,咸鮮中帶點味噌的獨特豆甜味.深色的吞拿魚當然不是甚麼肥美的魚腩部份還帶點筋,但因煮得半熟所以保持軟稔,入口充滿魚鮮味.

當濃郁的吞拿魚遇上同樣濃的味噌醬,兩者卻是出奇的搭,這配搭還有點和風味道,令人驚喜-沒想到在這英倫小店,竟吃到如此日本的味道!吞拿魚扒如此搶鏡,旁邊的沙律雖然新鮮爽脆,但頓時變成一大綠葉,默默的扶持著大主角.

Spaghetti with Garlic and Chili,意粉本身煮得剛好的軟硬,但麵粉香味稍欠-沒辦法,不可能是用新鮮pasta,就是差一點;蒜粒經過炒煮,香味得以揮發,香多過臭,多吃幾片也不會怕口變臭,哈哈.辣椒片則只是中國人的bb辣,頂盡說它是香料吧,入口不麻不痺,但外國的所謂辣就都是如此溫吞的,想必是外國人吃辣不及我們吧.簡直的材料炒在一起,意粉炒得乾身,但調味可以再濃一點重一點,就更加惹味了.

額外點的Grilled Pear Salad($68),用上幾種沙律蔬菜,雞心豆,紅腰豆,合桃,藍芝士和烤過的啤梨.滿滿的一大碗顏色豐富,令人看得賞心悅目.聞起來還有朕濃郁的燒烤香味,是從那幾片啤梨肉散發出來的吧!沙律菜是一貫的爽脆新鮮,混進了的合桃帶香脆,半溶的藍芝士質感黏搭味道濃郁,還有那咬起來粉綿的豆類,為這半來簡單的沙律添加不少食彩和多樣口感.

不得不提那烤啤梨,果肉依然多汁和爽中帶綿,表面的更有點焦糖香味,是梨肉中的果糖被燒烤的結果吧-加上其微暖的溫度,又為這沙律帶來多一個dimension的變化,豐富又滿足!

Duck liver and egg($98)是將鴨蛋用煎完肝流出的油煎熟,灑點海鹽,加點黑醋濃汁,即成.切開在盪漾的蛋黃,金黃的汁液立刻爆出,將那蛋白都浸沒了;切一小口無筋的鴨肝嘗嘗,煎得半溶的鴨肝在舌頭上立即溶化,酥香得來不算非常肥膩,是可以接受的範圍;當然,點少許酸黑醋汁就更能夠平衡那內臟的酥.

包裹著的蛋白因為用肝油煎香,所以比平常的香和甜很多;相比之下,那看來很膩的蛋黃液,也許因大多已流到碟上去,也沒麵包可以點來吃,有點浪費的感覺-如果可以配一小片麵包,吸收一下煎肝流出來的油份,客人可選擇用來吸收多餘油分,不怕死的也可以拿來吃,會否更佳?

吃完主菜,就是期待很久的甜品時間!如果不是預訂了一片lemon tart,walk in才點應該會吃不到-幸好之前多口一問,否則就吃不到這傳說中的檸檬批!

Lemon tart是扁扁的一片,薄薄的lemon curd下面櫬以薄酥的批底,再伴以輕忌廉.一吃,噢,這檸檬餡果然夠酸!餡料比者喱濕,但沒有立口的感覺;酸甜味非常清新,令人’眼前一亮’,頓時滯感大消!受不了太酸,也可伴以甜甜的忌廉同吃,兩者味道互相融和平衡,會易入口一點.派底也夠酥脆,牛油味香,不會搶過檸檬餡的風頭.我未在很多地方吃過檸檬批,但我可以說,這是在香港難得是真的酸(而非死甜)的檸檬批,雖然有點貴,要四十八元一片!

另一甜品是跟餐的orange mousse cake($38),慕絲質感幼滑輕怡,但奶味搶眼得很,嘗不到甚麼橙味;只有在沉在底部的橙肉粒,才能嘗到少許果味,那帶煙韌的質感也和mousse成一對比.餅底以牛油消化餅製成,不會太過鬆散,在這間不是專門做甜品的餐廳能吃到如此質素,已是非常好的!

在這非常舒服的小店多坐一會,聽著悠揚的音樂,還真有令人身處英國的錯覺-又或是像店主放在樓梯旁那本硬皮畫冊那般,身處的不是遠在地球另一方的英國,而是once upon a time的殖民地時期的香港?

對九七年前的香港沒有很深印象,但在近年,從新聞報紙上看到的聽到的,普遍都不是甚麼正面的值得興奮的報導.今天的社會怨氣甚重,生活壓力更大,這城市並不是一個happy city.

A group of us, six colleagues and myself, decided to have lunch at Limehouse today since some of us had been there previously and raved about this small restaurant's fish and chips. Despite not having a reservation, the restaurant was able to seat our party right away in the front room. Because the sought after fish and chips were not on the set lunch menu, our waitress offered to include our desired dish on the menu for the set price, so we were thrilled. Because the sought after fish and chips were not on the set lunch menu, our waitress offered to include our desired dish on the menu for the set price, so we were thrilled. Two in our group chose the pasta dish, one was suddenly called back to our office and requested to have her salad to go, and the remaining four of us went for the fish and chips. We were all served the soup course, at which point our waitress informed us the restaurant was out of fish and chips. Dismayed about not being informed earlier, one of our colleagues decided to leave, but the remaining three of us who originally ordered the dish reluctantly chose to order the chicken breast with prata and kimchi.

No sooner had I begun to eat my chicken did I realize it was raw in the middle. This, of course, prompted my two other colleagues to check their dishes and sure enough, the chicken breasts on their plates were also raw. The restaurant agreed to fire up new chicken breasts for us, but the damage was already done. Our waitress and her supervisor seemed barely concerned about this major mishap, which could have landed a few of us in the hospital, and didn't seem to grasp the severity of the situation. When our final bill was discounted one set meal, the woman who seemed "in charge" rudely remarked that she would give us a discount, "but only this time!" .... Ahhh, the pleasure I would have had to be a food safety inspector at that moment. Quick note to chef: Chicken is meant to be cooked well done, not medium rare.

This restaurant is attractive and seems to have a popular following, since the food was alright. However, given our recent experience and the surprisingly casual way the staff dealt with our near bout of food poisoning, I wonder what other things are being overlooked in the kitchen. I certainly do not have plans of returning to Limehouse anytime soon to find out.

首先要讚一讚﹐星期六餐廳開 12:00﹐我 11:55 入門口﹐雖不見任何侍應﹐但廚房走出來的小伙頭說我可以坐著等﹐他還帶點歉意的說「你可以坐下等﹐只是我不知何時才有同事回來招呼你」無問題﹐外面溫度 30 多度﹐可以在冷氣地方等﹐真是一大方便。餐廳下層有 6-7 張枱﹐但只有一位侍應﹐見她手忙腳亂的斟水、落單、接電話... 雖然等得有點不耐煩也不敢煩她。餐湯是甘筍南瓜湯﹐味帶清甜。主菜我叫了 Carbonara﹐侍應小姐說今日沒有 Spaghetti﹐Carbonara 改用闊的麵條。由於我一心想試餐廳做的白汁﹐所以覺得無問題。結果麵和汁都令人非常失望﹐汁味道很濃但欠缺芝士和蛋香﹐只有很重的鹹味﹐汁亦都沒有好好的掛在麵條上﹐是完全不合格的 Carbonara。朋友點了鴨肉泰式汁沙律﹐醬汁鹹到不得了!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 配新鮮菜都難以入口﹐朋友反說鴨肉因沒有沾到泰式汁﹐所以並不鹹﹐我吃了幾口覺得鴨肉根本就無味﹗埋單 $194﹐自覺吃了一個比「快餐店」還要差的午餐。其實這間餐廳的位置和裝修都非當好﹐有格調得來很幽靜﹐但食物如果一般﹐叫人那敢再光顧?

Smoked salmon. Sheppard's pie, sticky toffee pudding. Job done. Perfect Saturday night comfort food after a large Friday. Sheppards pie better than chinnery. Very layed back cool little place. Well worth a visit, unique in this town, in a v good way.

點菜後不久,一個好的開始就是侍應隨隨奉上的蕃茄濃湯,未到已嗅到濃郁的蕃茄香味。酸味是這道湯的精髓,剛剛好,而且濃稠得宜,兼有迷迭香的香氣。

以牛扒薯條作午餐,感覺有點肥膩,但以清爽的胡椒汁調味則有另一番氣息。牛扒、薯條及青豆也以黑椒輕輕調味,除帶出鮮味外,亦能增加一點辛辣來促進食慾。碟上的牛扒煎至七成熟左右,有少少血水流汁,本應非常美味,可是肉質偏硬,牛扒的質數亦不好,就算份量再大也不能吸引客人,令人有點失望。幸好薯條炸得脆口有薯味,青豆亦沒有雪藏味,總算有一點安慰。

朋友的大蝦芒果沙律很有英國風味,大蝦經燒製後以黑椒調味,有辛辣的口感,正好與酸酸甜甜的芒果來一個調合。新鮮蔬菜輕輕以芒果汁來作調味,比用沙律醋來得更清新,而且亦多了一份甜味,兼少了一份酸味,整碟顯得很輕盈,絕對適合朋友的節食計劃,清新之餘還能有味感的享受。

主菜過後,我仍有點意猶未盡,決定追加甜品。自從早前飲食雜誌介紹了這間的檸檬批,一直希望嘗試,但奈何找不到機會,今日就趁這個機會一試。檸檬撻是一種非常膩滯,但亦都是非常清新的甜品,雖然有點矛盾,但真是一道雙面刃。Lemon custard看似企身,但實情是非常creamy,甜酸平衡處理得很巧妙,甜比酸多少少,有濃郁的檸檬芳香,配上少許淡忌廉,奶味即時與甜及酸混合,即變成檸檬慕絲般,味道千變萬化,真出色。最後配上一杯咖啡,真的是美滿的一餐。

一頓午餐過後,又要回到地獄,但這兒真的很寫意,無拘無束,還有點正在渡假的感覺。雖然牛扒一般,但其餘食物質素不俗,而其舒適的環境更令人心情放鬆,所以我很喜歡這兒。閒時到來,看見如此清幽的環境,可以給自己一個喘息的機會,之後便能有源源不絕的動力去面對艱苦的工作。

沒有期望是甚麼安格斯牛扒但沒想過味道會這麽強差人意,牛扒本身脂肪分佈欠佳,加上多筋,完全影響了口感。其實好像飛鷹之類的本地牛扒屋採用的蘇格蘭牛扒,成本不高但亦可做得很滋味。

試過之前兩款菜式後,對這個田螺長通粉已不敢寄以厚望,但抱着平常心之下反而有所回報。長通粉煮至al dente,再加上大大粒的田螺和一個厚薄適中的鴨肝汁,配搭雖簡單但味道很是匹配。

朱古力慕絲餅 (Grade: 3/5)
每次進膳,豐富不豐富,美味不美味,甜品的環節總不可缺少。但試過餐湯和牛扒之後,食神也不覺有點膽怯去接受另一個打擊,但在集體問責的精神下,我們最終決定硬着頭皮落單。效果沒有預期中的差,慕絲做得軟滑,最重要的是味道不會太甜。

英國餐廳有risotto,ok surprise~ 煮得都OK,但我prefer軟少少,因為自已煮risotto都會煮軟少少!不過我都明正宗risotto係會偏硬!所以都OK的,但美中不足係完全無肉的!

fd揀左鴨胸,聽講都OK的

有杯milk tea跟,味道OK~

呢餐要around $90~情調OK,但食物質素一般,不過係鬧巿中搵到呢個feel的餐廳,實在難得!!!

A simple, no-frills menu. Just the essentials. I reckon the menu changes quite often. To be honest the things on the menu this time weren't exactly what I was looking for. I would've fancied some shepherds pie or bangers and mash, or even good old surf n' turf (more auzzie though) and fish and chips. Oh well. Maybe next time.

I quite enjoyed my soup. Usually I want my Russian Borsch thick and rich and substantial. This one was different - it was quite watery (in terms of 'texture'), but nonetheless yummy. Prolly cooked it for a long time and all the flavour had gone into the soup? Not sour. H liked it too. There was also a bit of veg - not enough. Could've given us more.

I wanted bread with my soup, so I asked the waiter whether there would be a bread basket. No - was the reply. But she said she would serve us complimentary bread, on the house. Hmm. A generous gesture but I think they ought to come with the soup. The bread wasn't too good, as one would expect with complimentary items. You can see for yourself from the photo.

S order this. I absolutely loved it and regret not having ordered it for myself. Diced boiled egg, avocado, cheese, mustard mayo dressing, grilled chicken cut into cubes, romaine diced into small bite-sized chunk. The size of each ingredient was just right - bite sized - so you could have a bit of everything in one bite and still manage to look polite and mannered.
A plus for both girls and guys! It was tossed well, chilled, and the dressing was perfectly seasoned. This is a really good salad.

I ordered this dish but i'ts not my fav mushroom risotto. I love mushroom. The risotti was properly cooked - not too watery, no uncooked grains, not too cheesy, not too filling. In that sense I liked it. Sometimes after only a few mouthfuls I would want to stop. Not that it doesn't taste good but that the cheese made it too filling. Good job. However, could've done much better with the mushrooms. I want portobello and porcini, properly seasoned, pan fried. More mushroom flavour needed.
But I must say the dish looks very appealing and comforting.

Personally not a big fan of duck breast. H order this. From H: duck breast cooked medium, has a gamey flavour (in a good way though) and smelled good. I myself helped myself shamelessly to the cheesy peas - cooked with onion and cheese (Jamie Oliver's recipe) and the shrooms. Potatoes could've been tastier. Prolly needs more time in the oven, and a bit of sauce or seasoning. Right now they're a bit bland. Balsamic reduction was excellent. Could've sprinkled more on top.

+$30 for a dessert of the day. boy, pretty expensive. You need to ask the waiter what the dessert of the day is. Today's was lemon tart.

Not entirely what I expected. In fact its' completely NOT what I expected. It was too, too runny. It had the runniness of whipped cream. @@ That...shouldn't be what lemon tart's supposed to be like. Perhaps they didn't give it enough time in the fridge? I don't know. It's flavour was alright though. Sweet with the appropriate amount of tartness. But not worth $30 at all.


Conclusion:
With set lunches at $88, I am coming back to try the other traditional dishes. I'm waiting for the bangers and mash, or fish and chips. Then I will be able to truly give a judgment as to whether this stuff is authentic Brit food.
I am a big fan of jamie oliver and nigella. Hehee. Please give Limehouse a go.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the food at Limehouse. My favourite being the calories/cholesterol/FLAVOUR-laden “duck liver with egg”. The liver is suitably crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The egg is slightly runny and pairs superbly with the liver. I’d run another marathon just for it… Next, “shepherd’s pie” - reliably tasty and hearty, and I have a robust appetite. My only complaint was that it was slightly on the salty side last time I had it. What constitutes a good lemon tart has always been difficult as it’s terribly subjective; some like it, well, tart, while some prefer it just tangy. I can only say that it works for me. Other dishes that I have tried on various occasions include beef stew, fish and chips, chicken tikka masala, are all well-executed.

As I said, it’s not the best of the lot (but then I haven’t really found that in HK yet), but it’s dependable and wholesome – isn’t that what comfort food is all about?

Now, if they could only perfect that cup of coffee…

For the old generation of Chinese in UK, Limehouse and Popular was a community for workers there with former Chinatown nearby in the Pennyfields. The second/third generations of BBC’s probably have less recollection of that or have been told stories by their grandparents of tales of dish washing and other duties in Chinese restaurants.

Limehouse was a maritime area in the old days with functioning docks, however the modern Limehouse has evolved with the Docklands railway serving it at Limehouse DLR station.

The Limehouse in HK could possibly be opened by a 2nd or 3rd generation BBC who knows the best of both worlds, but that is my guess.

Anyway, I have been longing to try out this restaurant since it opened, but it was closed when I wanted to try, and the phone is hard to get through.

The Limehouse in HK is situated in a secluded side street in Wan Chai, slightly uphill, with wooden windows and doors. When you dine there in the daytime, the gentle sun rays shine through the windows into the restaurant. Perhaps in period before the not so hot summer, it would be great to sit outside and eat, and if there were lush grass areas around it would be wonderful and golden retrievers running loose.

Well anyway for lunch, there was a simple lunch, which includes soup and mains, I chose the soup and bangers and mash.

When the pea soup was served, it had freshly chopped mint on the top, and fine bubbles on top.
The top layer is fine green foam, and the watery soup beneath it, is a darker green.
The greenness of it was like fresh chlorophyll, the consistency of the soup was very watery, yet it contained pieces of pea in it.
Although it was watery, the taste was intense, and the fresh mint complimented the soup very well.
I think this is the best pea soup I have had so far.

For the bangers and mash, it was three sausages on top of mash, a side of peas, and sauce.
The sauce was slightly disappointing because it wasn’t the usual gravy, it was made of mustard, mayonnaise and tasted creamy.

The Trifle which I wanted to try wasn’t available that day, but it looks delicious from earlier OR pictures.
In the end, I ordered the Lemon tart, which I haven’t had in a while, the lemon curd was nice and tangy and the whole tart was very buttery, the only thing that ruined it was the black crust on the edge.

Overall the meal was good, and it was relaxing dining there with the sun shining through, the sausages could have tasted better, and gravy would have been preferred.
Recently, I found the pork sausages I have been missing at Queen Victoria, the ones served for school dinner that everyone hates in the UK!!
