Most would agree that welcoming in-laws from abroad is a wonderful thing!
(Since that means that they are usually abroad...... Of course I'm just joking, they are wonderful people!*)
This was their first stop. My parents chose this place. I didn't manage to take any photos because it was rather hectic arranging everything, dealing with in-laws from Japan, parents and relatives from Hong Kong...etc.
Environment:
As far as I'm aware, they have one VIP room which looked pretty well "insulated' and could hold about 12 persons. Two to three large tables for 10 persons. 10 semi-circular sofa seats for 4-5 persons and about 10 smaller tables for two.
Like their next door neighbour "Spasso", they also occupied part of the podium overlooking the Victoria Harbour (the Pacific Club direction) and a number of tables were placed outside as well. Probably a better idea during dinner than lunchtime.
The ceilings were high but for some reason it's rather noisy. A bit noiser than "Ye Shanghai".
Booking is strongly recommended because this place is extremely busy whether at lunchtime or at dinner time.
Food:
Cold platter: It consisted of Char siu, Jellyfish, Beef marinated in five spices,
Double Boiled Soup: Can't remember the precise ingredients but it was pork based and had, I beleive some sea whelk. Very aromatic seafood taste. Seemed like it had been boiled for hours. This was very good.
Roast pig: This was pretty good as well. Not extremely fat. More meat than fat. The skin was crispy, the meat was tender and sweet. Not extremely warm, probably due to the time taken to bring it out from the kitchen and dividing the dishes for us. I don't think pancakes were served. But no bad at all.
Spring rolls: Extremely long and came in two silver cups. Looked very fancy.
Crispy Chicken: I had to remind them to take away the chicken head because many non-Hong Kongers are quite afraid of that. Not too oily. The meat was very tender and well marinated. The skin was very crispy but not too oily. Much better than the one provided at, for example "Summer Palace".
Steamed Garoupa: Steamed with the typical soy sauce for steamed fish, spring onions and with some hot oil. Good timing. So very tender. Better than most Chinese restaurants.
Steamed Choi-Sum with preserved vegetables: The choi-sums were probaby in season. Those were fresh and crispy without the slightest hint of bitterness, which you might get if it's not in season. The plum flavour of the preserved vegetables was absorbed by the choi-sums as well. Very good.
Efu Noodle with crab and crab roes: This was a surprising big hit with everyone. It was efu noodle in a sort of white salad sauce with shredded crab meat and crab roes spead on it. The ingredients were very fresh. The crab and crab roe was excellent. We ordered an extra portion of that noodle. The noodle was tasty and chewy as well. The salad sauce did not overwhelm the taste of the fresh crab taste but instead mixed well with it, providing a smooth and silky tenture. Recommended.
Desserts: Everyone had either mango pudding or sesame soup (if I remember correctly). The mango pudding had many fresh mango chunks inside. My sesame soup was quite good. Strong sesame flavour but not too sweet.
Suddely we were served with a caramel ice cream with a large piece of solidified caramel. This was served to us by mistake but we gladly accepted it. . Very nice as the caramel was sweet but not crazily sweet.
Reasonable price: about HK$250 per person, which I find reasonable given the quality of the food.
Service: Very hard to flag down staff as they are constantly rushing around. Quite polite. I had to leave my seat on numerous occasions to "grab" someone to our table. Quite willing to divide the dishes for everyone on the table. No complaints.
All in all, good quality Cantonese food at a reasonable price in a pretty decent setting. Not extremely quiet though. Remember to book!
Sitting outside might be interesting during lunchtime.
Worth a try!
* Just in case anyone is double-checking. = P
* 外国人很多觉得鸡头和凤爪是很恐怖的东西,我则经常提醒他们 - 包括太太及外家 - 刺身那还在动的鱼头,或看著活生生的鲍鱼在铁板上狰札,或打边炉一串串的生虾,或生吞活剥的生蚝其实更恐布。我不吃那铁板鲍鱼的。生虾和生蚝亦尽量不叫。有的话都会立即解决牠们的。
