MISTifying:
I was just having a quick browse on what to have for lunch and this shop popped up on OpenRice. Of course, the name reminded me of rasupermen and I was wondering whether this shop was just making fun of rasupermen. As stated on OR, one of their signature ramen was "Boston Lobster Ramen". This looked interesting so I decided to go.
When I arrived, the shop looked similar modern like MIST and the whole feel was a bit like MIST. I had a quick look at the menu placed outside the door and found that the prices were also like MIST. The lobster ramen would cost HK$350!
I was quite worried about this at first, but since I've came all the way, and I saw a spicy option, I figure I might as well try it. Since this place is new and the price quite prohibitive, I could get a seat without queuing.
MISTique Decor:
Chic and classy. A lot of black glass. They had about 10 tables for two. All the tables were widely spaced out.
Comfortable seats and cool utelsils.
MISTerious Menu:
Good explanation of the type of broths, size of ramen and ingredients in English ONLY. So some Japanese customers might not understand it, which is quite ironic and tends to show the target clientele.
The lovely and polite manageress kindly explained the ramen to me. She told me that certain items were the original items and there were some new innovations. Probably sensing my confusion at her statement, she explained that raIronmen was actually MIST.
I haven't been to MIST. After I've mustered enough courage (&cash) to go, it folded.
What I've heard was that Miso and Salt were their signature ramens. They have it here too. Also a beef consomme ramen, boston lobster ramen, alaskan crab ramen, ceasar salad ramen (!), spicy sea food ramen, aburi soba (lo mien), and a few others. Some broths are made of thick pork bone soup, some are made of thin pork bone soup, chicken stock/ dried seafood stock and beef consommé...etc.
The toppings are clearly stated on the menu as well, which is very good. Ramens of different size were used in different ramens. The size was also stated clearly, if that helps.
The price is ranged between HK$110 to HK$350 plus 10% service charge - steep.
Egg, Nori and Char SIu are usually not included in the ramen and will cost between $20-$30.
You've guessed it right RaladiesandgentleMen, I ordered the Spicy Seafood Ramen (HK$200).
It's a mix of chicken and seafood broth. Broth: Decent. Pretty strong dashi soup. Chicken taste was not pronounced. Still, miles better than Rasupermen. Those who like strong bonito broth would like it here. This reminded me very much of Menya Musashi. But it's a bit clearer and smoother here. Not bad.
The home made chili sauce was fine. Not overwhelmingly spicy. A lot of dried red pepper and chili - possibly with a bit of dried shrimps too.
Quite a lot of spring onions, Ito Karashi (like those used at Tamashii) and just a little bit of chopped garlics.
The seafood toppings were fine too:
One pretty nice tiger prawn. Fried beforehand. Pretty meaty and aromatic. Small suggestion, make sure the legs are intact, otherwise please take the loose legs out of the bowl of ramen. It makes it a lot easier to eat.
Mussels: Two mussels. A bit of sand. Average.
Clams: Two clams. Good quality. Pretty fresh.
Scallop: Slightly overcooked. But I suppose it's not sashimi grade.
Squid: Chewy. Not bad.
Fungi: It's not chopped. Crisp and tasty. Half way through the noodles I suddenly felt like I was eating a bowl of laksa!
Ramen: No.18 (18 strands per 3 cm I suppose. That's what I've learnt from Ramen Champion, Bario)
Again, miles better than what my wife and I had at Rasupermen. No alkaline taste. Chewy. Good texture. Egg:
Before - Looks pretty decent.
After:
Average - a bit of egg sauce.
Pretty salty outside but the soy taste barely entered the middle part of the egg. The result was just so-so.
Make no MISTake:
~ There will be blood in the water, and the sharks will come ~
Due to it's reputation and strong fan base, it's bound to be very popular in the future anyway, despite it's rather aggressive pricing.
All in all, the bowl of ramen was decent, the noodle is a huge improvement over Rasupermen. However, I don't think it's really worth HK$200 a bowl.
So considering the price and the quality, I initially wanted to just give [OK].
On the other hand, this being the first comment, I don't want to appear to be too much of a wet blanket like Whiplash or as obnoxious as Tony Stark.
So I'll give a smile because of the lovely smile of the staff in raironman.
题外话/补充资料:
Let me guess, the next in the series will be RaBat/Spidermen? RaXmen? Ragentlemen?
What about some super villians like the Mandarin instead? RaMendarin? :P
