Seeing that this restaurant has yet to have a review in English, I felt the need to publish one for the English Openrice users out there. Environment & Hygiene:
This place is up on a hill so it requires a light work out before getting there. On the door, there is a poster showing that Lucky Indonesia is a "Michelin inspectors’ favourites for good value". Who would have known, eh? The decor looked as if it had never had any renovations or touch ups since it opened, but I do think that the hygiene is okay here. It's a down to earth place.
Service:I haven't much to say about the service, but the server was friendly and the food came out fairly quickly so that is all that matters to me.
Taste & Value:
There are no pictures or description on any of the food items on the menu and unless you can read Chinese or Indonesian, it'd be pretty hard for you to order.
The first dish to come was the Nasi Kuning ($48). I found out that it means yellow rice because tumeric makes it yellow. This dish was a party on a plate. It had:Tumeric Rice: This yellow rice supposedly is made with coconut milk and tumeric, but I wouldn't have known since I couldn't taste either. Although it lacked flavours, I liked that the rice was dry.
Chicken wing/chicken pieces: Dry, not tender, not juicy. That's all I can say.
Beef Rendang: The sauce was nice and the few pieces that were there were tender and tasty.
The rest: The fried peanuts, dried fish, hard-boiled egg, pickled radish, and peppers were just okay. The peanuts didn't have a strong peanut taste , the pickled radish was bland, but the pickled peppers were tasty and gave the dish a nice kick.
This dish was barely warm when it was served and the meat was dry, also within 5 mins of ordering, this dish was out so I suspect that everything was made ahead of time and thrown onto the plate when it was ordered. I don't think cold food is worth $48. The next dish to come was the Beef Satay ($48). Indonesian satay has the sauce poured on top of the skewers instead of served on the side. Although the beef had that nicely grilled flavour and there was a lot of sauce, the beef was tough and the sauce wasn't rich enough.
Seeing that the portions weren't that big, my friend added a kwai tiew goreng ($48). It wasn't bad, but again I thought it wasn't rich enough. I want to say though, this dish is usually really greasy, so I was really impressed when theirs wasn't! I didn't have shinny lips after each bite.
Final Verdict:Maybe because other openricers had praised this place so highly that my expectations were too high so I was disappointed. There are other places that I'd go to for Indonesian food.
