Tai Ping Koon is undoubtedly one of Hong Kong’s most iconic restaurants. Originally founded in 1860 in Guangzhou, the restaurant specialises in Western cuisine that has been adapted to suit the tastebuds of Chinese customers. You feel a great sense of nostalgia upon entering the restaurant, with the decor and menu items transporting us back to a special moment in history. — Can’t say you’ve been to tai ping koon until you’ve ordered their iconic soufflé! This soufflé is literally bigger than the size of my head 😂 Made with just whipped egg whites and sugar, this soufflé is light in texture and slightly sweetened. It’s baked in a large glass dish until a golden brown finish, which adds a slight aroma to it. The inside is as light as air and despite it’s size, 2 people would actually be able to finish it (depending on how much you’ve ordered beforehand of course 😂).
Pic 2️⃣: 焗蟹盖 (Baked Crabmeat in Shell) - $231 hkd 🦀
— Slightly disappointed by this especially for the price point. This was just a little dry and under seasoned. Though I would say that in comparison to other baked crabmeat’s I’ve had in the past, they’re very generous with the amount of crab they give you which is great because the natural flavour of the crab makes up for the lack of seasoning.
Pic 3️⃣: 焗葡国鸡饭 (Baked Portuguese Style Chicken with Rice) - $149 hkd 🐓
— Very average. This was extremely oily and I actually had to scoop out some of the oil that was on the surface of the dish 😅 Taste wise, it was nothing spectacular, it lacked flavour that was supposed to come from the curry so the dish tasted quite one dimensional. Though the consistency of the sauce was quite smooth and creamy. The chicken was better seasoned and quite tender. I would say the potatoes were the best part, simply because they were the most flavourful and soaked up most of the flavour coming from the sauce.
Overall rating:
📍Ambiance: bright interior, classic decor which is characteristic of the 1960s, staff are friendly
⭐️Would visit again?: Worth trying once for the nostalgic value.
