A while back, boyfriend and I were dining at La Vache and noticed this place called White Beard Fish n Chips. We were curious ... fish n chips? Were they any good or the mass majority of the usual over battered and over priced items Hong Kong places like to offer as fish n chips. I bookmarked it and like many times I bookmark something on Openrice, I tend to forget about it until boyfriend says "hey let's do lunch in so and so area ... what do you have bookmarked?"As we were in Central to check

A while back, boyfriend and I were dining at La Vache and noticed this place called White Beard Fish n Chips. We were curious ... fish n chips? Were they any good or the mass majority of the usual over battered and over priced items Hong Kong places like to offer as fish n chips. I bookmarked it and like many times I bookmark something on Openrice, I tend to forget about it until boyfriend says "hey let's do lunch in so and so area ... what do you have bookmarked?"

As we were in Central to check out PMQ near by, I suddenly remembered ... oh! THERE'S THIS PLACE!

Not very big but there is seating both inside and out, the tongue in cheek decor had a lot of style. It was like you stepped into a casual fish n chips shop in Australia.

Menu is in English and Chinese. They offer a variety of different flavors of fish along with other fried seafood items for those that want something else. I guess we were in my boyfriend's idea of heaven.

As we arrived during lunch hour, they offered us a lunch menu as well. We decided to choose from the lunch menu as it included a drink.

Signature Fish n Chip ($60).  There was a fairly generous portion of chips. Nice and crispy, they fried and seasoned well. The fish, though not as big in size as most other places, was excellent. The fish was perfectly cooked and moist. The amount of batter was not too much. They have vinegar for those like to do it the traditional British way. But not to worry ... they have ketchup for those ketchup lovers.

Spicy Oyster Salad ($55). The oysters came with a side of grilled onion salad that was marinaded in a balsamic vinegar. Great for dipping the oysters in. The oysters were not over cooked. Again the batter was not too thick. Something I appreciate a lot.

Garlic Prawn ($42). As boyfriend was in clear deep fry heaven, he wanted a round of more fried food. So we shared a garlic prawn boat. This was ok though I think boyfriend loved it more. The batter held well and the prawn was fresh. Fried so well,  I could even eat the tails. That's how crispy it was.

For each item, you can choose a dipping sauce of your choice though the staff do offer what they think goes best. What we chose was tartar sauce (for the fish n chips as I'm a purist), lemon mayo for the oysters and garlic aioli for the prawn. For sauces, I liked the lemon mayo the most.

The lunch sets included a drink. But if you want craft beer like boyfriend did, you have to add $35. Which is the one on the right. I had the lemonade which was pretty good. It even had bits of lemon peel in it.

A nice casual place for fish n chips. Which is what this type of food is all about and this place captures it. Prices fairly inexpensive. Staff was friendly.  We later found out they had another branch at the Central Ferry Pier for a total grab and go experience. Will be back.
