Very close to HKU, on the intersection of Center St and Bonham Road - discovered this neighborhood bakery by accident. An impressive variety is offered: special items include unagi (Japanese roasted eel) bread, spring onion bread (like the Shanghainese spring onion pancake) chestnut bread, fruit cake slice etc. Also I think all items here are cheaper than even the average non-chain bakery. An impressive variety is offered: special items include unagi (Japanese roasted eel) bread, spring onion bread (like the Shanghainese spring onion pancake) chestnut bread, fruit cake slice etc. Also I think all items here are cheaper than even the average non-chain bakery. My purchases:
1. Chestnut bun ($3.5)
A long paper-wrapped bun with a chestnut filling. I don't think they have added any cream/oil, it tasted purely of sweetened mashed chestnut. While the flavor was quite strong I still think they could have piped in more chestnut paste. But at this price I won't complain.
2. Banana cake ($3)
A thick (about 1-inch) slice of soft banana cake. This is the Hong Kong style banana cake, not brick-like banana bread. It is nicely moister than usual yet not greasy. Visually appealing with the real bits of banana clearly visible, the real banana smell
lingered in my bag the whole day - I am not exaggerating!!
3.Paper-wrapped cake ($3.5)
Gigantic, it looked as if it was bursting out of the muffin tin! When I first clipped onto it it felt unpleasantly stiff, but eating it proved me wrong - the texture was pillowy soft, but it was not airy. While it smelled sweet this was the only element of its flavor - it did not taste eggy (like the ones from Maxim's) nor condensed milk-y (like Happy Cake Shop in Wanchai). This makes the cake unique to Pak Kee - the cake is still very enjoyable nonetheless, just different. And it was definitely not oily, so it would be a good option if you're watching your waistline.
Dirt cheap, good quality - will definitely come back again to try their savory items, will visit more frequently but too bad its location is so out of the way.
