For many Hong Kongers, Lai Yuen Amusement Park brings a lot of childhood memories. It was a huge amusement park, complete with rides and an elephant! Though it closed 18 years ago, there was a bit of a revival a couple of years ago in Central during the hot summer.Now, there is a restaurant where the theme is based on the amusement park. Now, there is a restaurant where the theme is based on the amusement park. Located in Tsim Sha Tsui, right outside The One, is a rather decent sized restaurant serving cha chan teng classics.
Before entering the restaurant, you are greeted with this cute lion.
The restaurant has a whimsical decor with lights and hanging horses that you would find in a merry-go-round. There are lovely drawings inspired by the amusement park.
Boyfriend and I had arrived for afternoon tea so they had an afternoon tea session menu. Menu in Chinese only. All sets included a drink.
If you didn't want the standard drink, you can upgrade to special drink.
Deep Fried Chicken Wings with Salad ($38). Though plated on a stylish wood tray, the food tasted terrible. The chicken wings were so dry, they were bordering on crunchy. There was an option of fries or salad but we chose a salad. But they still included the ketchup for the fries even though it wasn't present. I guess it worked out as the chicken wings were bland so I dipped them in the ketchup for flavor. The salad was ok and they were dressed with balsamic vinaigrette.
French Toast ($38). Plated on a cast iron skillet, the French toast were sad soggy bits of bread that had a sponge-like texture. Some "cubes" of toast were soaked with the pancake syrup and were not so it was left dry.
Though the decoration of the restaurant is pretty good and adheres to the theme of an amusement park and the food was plated nicely, the food was just fairly unedible. Quite sad where so much work was placed into the surface but when it comes to the food, it's left behind. Won't be back.
