I took a chance one day for lunch at a restaurant that I couldn't really find the name of. There wasn't even a window to peak into.The menu was in English and Chinese. There was no 10% service charge. And as a medical professional, they offered a $30 discount. I had forgotten my ID tag so I didn't cash in on this promo. The place was tiny with what it seemed only one person waiting tables and one person in the back cooking.
I ordered the chicken with tomato and onions bento set ($85). You can add $20 for a coffee/tea or ice cream and you can ask for more rice. The set came on a tray and included a bowl of daily soup, salad, pickles and rice.
The chicken was delicious. Very homestyle so it wasn't too fancy. But it was comforting. The chicken was tender. The tomatoes soft and squishy. The onions were sweet.
The salad was fresh and not heavily drowned in the salad dressing.
The pickles were pickled cucumbers. Not too sour but crisp.
The daily soup was a dashi with pumpkin and shimeji mushrooms. It wasn't fancy but it was savory enough.
The food wasn't fancy but it really felt like something I would find in any Japanese household. It was simple yet delicious. Portion is small. So be warned. I am a light eater and I was still a it hungry afterwards. The people all dined quietly, a rarity that I can't seem to find in Hong Kong and I liked it. Will definitely come again. Tip is to come early as a slight line started after I left. Might come for dinner sometime.
