The first time I encountered Marugame Udon was in Takamatsu, where Marugame is based I believe, many years ago. I was impressed by its quality, transparency, cleanliness and low price (it is cheaper in Japan than in HK). When it opened its first store in HK last year, I was glad that it finally came to town. The keys of this store are its udon and soup but not the tempura I feel. The keys of this store are its udon and soup but not the tempura I feel. I am not saying that the tempura is not good (especially factored in the price), just that they are not as outstanding as the udon itself. Nowadays eating outside, high quality rice and noodle are rarely found in HK. Most of the white rice you order in a restaurant is crap, maybe because the quality of the rice is not good, or it is not properly prepared (overcooked or stay in the hot-hold for too long). In Marugame, the udon itself is tasty and chewy as it is freshly made in the store, together with the bonito soup already make a delicious meal. The best thing about this store is that you can add as much ginger and spring onion as you like and they go extremely well with the udon in bonito soup. I always feel fulfilled with a plain bowl of udon here, sometimes good things can be very simple.
For those who appreciate simple and decent food, this is the place for a causal meal. I hope it can sustain its standard going forward.
