I normally don't go for spicy dishes, much less 麻辣, but upon a friend's enthusiastic recommendation I was very glad to have made a rare exception for 大平伙with 3 companions.Everything from start to finish was outstanding and artfully presented, with the highlights being the pine nut salad, 口水鸡, and 红烧牛肉. Everything from start to finish was outstanding and artfully presented, with the highlights being the pine nut salad, 口水鸡, and 红烧牛肉. The chicken was perfectly cooked, moist and tender and yet without a trace of blood to be found, and the braised beef brisket was just tender beyond belief. While most of these dishes pack serious heat, the spices are well balanced by other seasonings resulting in a level of depth and complexity seldom found in other Szechuan joints. The soothing soups served in between courses also made the heat a lot more palatable.
The tofu desert made a refreshing and satisfying end to our wonderful meal. The overall standard of service is exemplary for a private kitchen - attentive but never overbearing, and the atmosphere was at once elegant and relaxed.
At $285 per head plus service charge it's certainly not cheap by any strech of the imagination, but in my opinion it was worth every penny. I'm already looking forward to my next meal there.
