Read about this new Hai Nan chicken and laksa place in CWB from various newspaper and dinning reviews, so decided to give it a try even though I NEVER eat Hai Nan Chicken except when in Singapore and visiting Bon Tong Kee. But since the owner and cook of this rstu is reputed to be from the Mandarin in Singapore, we decided to break my rule and take a leap of faith. We arrived around 7:30pm on Sat night, the rstu was full but turnover seemed pretty qucik as a table was arranged for us with only 1
We arrived around 7:30pm on Sat night, the rstu was full but turnover seemed pretty qucik as a table was arranged for us with only 10 minutes wait. The staff seemed friendly enough and even agreed to move our table from right infront of entrance to the side of door so to avoid foot traffic. I ordered the famous Rojak, Hai Nan Chicken, 2 bowls of chicken rice, Roti, and Laksa. Unfortunately, the waitress informed me that the Laksa had jsut been sold out, so we had to opt for ChaKewTiaw instead. Very disspointed, especially since that was the main attraction for my visit to this rstu, and absolutely no excuse for such a popular dish to be sold out so early on a Sat night !
The food all came quickly and packed our little table to the edges. The chicken was almost worth the HK128 price tag, juicy and tasteful even without the 3 dishes of sauces they gave us. The thick soy and the spicy sauce was what I ended up using, the ginger sauce has absolutely NO taste. The chicken rice was sooooo good we were finishing half the bowl before getting to the second piece of chicken. I think I could eat the rice by itself even without ordering the chicken ! The Rojak was also amazingly good, probably the best I've ever tasted in HK. The perfect blend of pineapple, apples, fried dough and fried tofu in a sweet yet savory sauce my boyfriend who's never had rojak before commented that this dish could almost qualify as a dessert instead of an appetizer ! The roti was also a good choice, fluffy and crispy to just the right degree. We had already finished it before realizing that they hvent brought us the curry dipping sauce served with the roti....oh well....no point asking the waittress for the sauce now that the roti is already in the tummy !
Over all, the food quality is as good as can be expected of a side street rstu in HK. The price is higher than other rstu of it's kind, but the envirement was clean and pleasant, and the staff tried to be helpful, so a little more money was worth it. Definetly worth a return visit from me since I've yet to have their famous Laksa ! and I'd take a second serving of their rojak any day of the week )
