Boyfriend was coming over for dinner as I was too tired to cook dinner for two, I decided to just order take away. But when I arrived here to thinking the Taiwanese restaurant was still here, it wasn't. Instead I found Mr. Maki. It appeared to sell sushi rolls but more along the lines of Americanized Japanese food where you get items mixed with kimchi and siuchuan chilli along with deep fried maki and sushi pizza. The place isn't very big. The kitchen is open for viewing and you order at the cashier.
Though mostly take away, they do have a few seats on the side for dine in. Decor was hip with a orange color theme.
Menu is in English and Chinese though some parts are in Chinese only. These are mostly the description but they have photos of all the food served. There is no 10% service charge. They offer sets that include a salad and soft drink, fried chicken, fries or sweet potato fries.
Everything is made to order so there is a bit of a wait. Everything was neatly packed away into a sturdy plastic bag and all was in sturdy containers which made it all the way home in one piece. The only utensils provided were chopsticks.
We ordered the Mango and Chicken Maki Roll ($59) and a Salmon and Tempura Prawn Maki Roll ($49). We upgraded to sets as well.
The set salad was crisp and fresh. It was basically lettuce and corn niblets with a Japanese style dressing.
One set we chose fries ($18). They came with generous pot of ketchup. The fries were hot and crispy with nice soft centers.
The other set we chose fried chicken ($15). They said four pieces but we got a mini one so that made five! The chicken was well seasoned and they added a yuzu sauce on top. The skin was still on and was very crunchy. The chicken was meat was juicy. As a side, I'd probably do this as a repeat order.
This is the Mango and Chicken Maki. The mango was placed on top and was very sweet. Like typical Americanized sushi, it was generously drizzled with siracha mayo and regular mayo. The chicken was actually deep fried so it was crunchy. I didn't expect that but it was good.
The other one we shared was the Salmon and Tempura Prawn. The salmon was on top and was fresh. There was a drizzle of teriyaki sauce and dabs of siracha mayo.
The prawn was crunchy but what I also found was they added a cube of cream cheese so it added a bit of creamy texture to the crunch. A pretty good combination and I liked this one more than the other one.
Reminiscent of the sushi I grew up with and missed seeing this here in Hong Kong. The place was clean and service was quick. The place is close enough to me with decent prices and potions so I'd most likely come back for take away again.
