With the recent boom in burger joints we are spoilt for choice in Hong Kong. Honbo has been around for a few years now and now with three stores they seem to be on the rise. Today I decided that it was time to try Honbo and went to the Wan Chai branch, fortunately I did not have to wait for a table. The lunch menu is simple, choose your burger, type of fries and drink. I ordered the Honbo burger which is two thinner 2oz patties opposed to the usual thicker one 4oz, regular fries and a Coke Zero
Omitting the Coke the fries was the first to arrive, portion size was average and appearance was golden brown.
For the taste it was better than expected with a soft interior and crunch outside, and importantly did not have much oil.
Whilst enjoying the fries the burger arrived, first thought was that it was smaller than anticipated but however that did not matter as long it was good. The flavour of the burger was a little lacking, its not that it was bad but I expected better, and I could not make out what their 'house sauce' was as there wasn't much of it. The raw flavour of the onions was a little over powering and the burger overall could have been better balanced with more lettuce and not on the menu a slice of tomato. And also the last two or three bites of the burger i.e. the end of the burger when the oil drips down to was oily which is normal but in this burger the oil tasted a little old.
The set cost $163 including service charge which was a little over my expectation.
Honbo wont be one of my go to places for burgers but I do like the modern and trendy decor, the helpful and cheerful staff so I will be back for a second try and go for the single 4oz patty instead of the 2x2oz patties, see you soon!
