I love La Rotisserie. I don't eat there a lot, because it's insanely greasy, but it is very good. They've moved their Sheung Wan shop across from its previous location and opened up La Sandwicherie. I'd passed by it, but it didn't look all that great. First off, the sandwiches are very cheap-- $25 to $38-- so they're trying to compete with Subway, which is a race to the bottom in my opinion. Second, the selection isn't up my alley. It's a French sandwich place with no ham and cheese sandwich! Th
So I ordered the chicken sandwich. It's chicken, a small amount of tomato, and tons of tarragon mayo. The menu says "salad" is on the sandwich, which I believe means "lettuce and some other veggies maybe" in British English.
In French English, apparently it means "literally nothing" because I got literally nothing besides the other listed ingredients of chicken, tomato, and tons of tarragon mayo. The sandwich was OK. The ingredients were pretty meagre for the amount of bread and mayo, so the balance was off. The chicken didn't seem as tender as the La Rotisserie stuff. I like more veggies on my sandwich, so I'd probably pick Subway instead of this.
My wife is more accepting of bizarre sandwiches, so she got the brie. It was composed of brie, apple, 2 walnuts, and "truffle vinaigrette". Oddly enough, the menu doesn't say that this sandwich has "salad" on it... but it does! She thought first of all that the distribution of ingredients led a lot to be desired. That picture is not of a re-arranged sandwich-- it came like that: two random walnuts and one end; brie piled on 2/3rds of the sandwich, and salad strewn about haphazardly. It was toasted, but only enough to make it a little warm, not to melt the brie. She said she prefers the brie sandwich at Pret a Manger.
Last but not least, the *iced* tea. Emphasis on *iced*, because its icedness is definitely a past-tense phenomenon. They appear to put some tea in ice early in the day, then leave it at room temperature until it's watered-down tea, with no ice in it. But I will say this for it-- it's really tasty! Tea with actual ice in it is my favorite non-alcoholic beverage, but some people (ahem, the French) haven't caught on to its summer-weather virtues.In the end, this place gets a frowny from me. If you're in the HK sandwich game and you can't beat Subway and Pret, then you should probably find a different game. Luckily, these people have, and it's right across the street-- La Rotisserie. My advice is to go there instead.
