Finally, Butao has moved to an easier to go location! It’s my first time to try the ramen there. I don’t know whether the quality went up OR down after the relocation.

Butao is regarded highly by my friends, who hailed it as an offeror of the best Japanese Ramen in Hong Kong. Ihe old hype seems to have cooled down a bit after a while now. The latest object and fancy and frenzy is the widely reported opening of Ichiran in Causeway Bay. Food lovers in Hong Kong are, of course, notorious for being oblivious and fads often come and go quickly without a trace. Expectedly, Butao’s market share has been threatened by increasing number of competitors.

But it would be big pity if Butao fell into oblivion after Ichiran’s rising popularity. Both the service AND the food quality in Butao are impressive, to say the least. This brand certainly has something unique to deliver for ramen lovers. The quality on offer in Butao is, without a doubt, beyond compare with chain ramen stores such as Ajisen. And it is surely on the same par as shops such as much loved stores such as Ramen Kureya in Tai Hang.
The way they offer a choice as to the ‘hardness’ (texture) of the noodle, the degree of ‘oiliness’ of the soup and saltiness certainly offer flexibility compared to conventional ramen houses.

Butao might be the last place to head to for a comfy seat where you can wind down and have a cosy chat with friends. The setting is nicely decorated but their signature wooden chairs would leave you ready to leave right after you finish. (Good strategy to raise the turnover rate, huh!) The atmosphere there is by no means unwelcoming. The staff all looked helpful and cheerful all the while we were here.

Black King: the oil and the soup base can be very thick and the thickness can escalate to a degree of pastiness if you choose the ‘浓味’ option! In general, the Black King here is so much tastier than that from other shops such as Ippudo and Menya Musashi (面屋武藏)! The unique scent of the oil coupled with the unignorably savourable taste of squid make this signature item stand out.

Butao: The cheapest pick but it’s not as special as others. It’s too ordinary compared to the other choices on the menu. But it’s the healthiest choice apparently. Weight watchers are succumb to your lunch buddies’ pressure, go for Butao!

 The combination the cheesy and veggie (alleged to be Brazilian leaves and olives?) taste would take your taste buds by surprise right away – guaranteed!

Be sure to bring water with you as the thirst after taking in so much sodium in a meal would normally leave you terribly thirsty. $15 extra for drinks here is probably not the wisest choice given the only choices available are COKE/ COKE ZERO. They should offer something else such as Tropicana/ Asahi. Why are they undermining their business with such a limited beverage menu? The staff’s apology failed to ease my frustration.

Incidentally, the 'add on' items are also worth a try. Have a taste of the ‘liquid heart’ egg. The three of us all found it surprisingly good and it tasted so much fresher than those from other Japanese eateries!

Overall, we had a good family time there. The ramen there beats that from Ramen Kuriya and certainly that from Ippudo (which is sooo overrated in my view). Butao is arguably the best Japanese style noodle house I have tried so far in Hong Kong.
Look forward to trying the Red King there on my next visit!
